In 2009 we bought a Beko frost free fridge freezer from Currys for over £400.

Last weekend (4th July) the back of the fridge compartment blew up like an air-bag, pushing out the shelves and opening the fridge door.

The freezer was still working at this stage but only until the following day.

On Monday 6th I sent an email complaint to Beko and received the following reply:

"Good afternoon,Thank you for your email.

I am sorry to hear of the fault with your Beko Fridge/Freezer.

If the back wall has blown out on the appliance, this unfortunately cannot be repaired

.Unfortunately due to the age of your appliance Beko PLC cannot offer any assistance.

We can only advise that the guarantee for your product, under English consumer legislation and the Sales of Goods Act to Consumer Regulations 2002,

is contractually with your retailer. Therefore they have strict liability in terms of your claim.

It would be normal practice for issues such as yours to be addressed directly to the retailer.

Thank you for taking the time to contact and please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

"So, (later that day) I sent the following email to Currys:

"About 5 years ago we bought a Beko frost free fridge freezer from Currys (serial number 0910577910).

On Saturday 4th July we noticed that the back of the fridge had blown up like an air bag.

The freezer still seemed to be working.

On Sunday 5th July the freezer stopped freezing.

Why should this happen to such an expensive and relatively new fridge/freezer? We are devastated.

We thought that Beko products were supposed to be reliable.

We have contacted Beko and they said that

'We can only advise that the guarantee for your product, under English consumer legislation

and the Sales of Goods Act to Consumer Regulations 2002, is contractually with your retailer.

Therefore they have strict liability in terms of your claim.

It would be normal practice for issues such as yours to be addressed directly to the retailer.'

"At about 18:00 the same day I received a phone call from Currys saying that they knew of this same fault happening before

and, due to the age of the product they said that I could have a voucher for £30 (which I received later that week) towards another purchase.

Do you think 5 years is a reasonable amount of time for this product? If not use the sale of goods act to complain (SOGA) to Currys if they knew of the issue then they should replace it for a like item...

If I have been of any help, please click on my star and leave a note to let me know, thank you.

5yrs is fair under soga you'd be hard pushed to enforce it further

pers if they are offering £30

I'd politely point out the org price of the unit

and its quality, which is why you purchased it.

and that depreciation over 5yrs does not equate to £30 in your books for such an expensive item.

they might up their offer , they might not

but by writing back they've admitted some liability

dx

please don't hit Quote...just type we know what we said earlier..

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...

Given that the unit is 5 and a half years old at least (You don't say when in 2009 it was purchased, but any time in 2009 would be at least 5 and a half years ago, up to 6 and a half years) then I wouldn't say their offer is unreasonable really. You might be able to get them to up their offer to somewhere around £50 or maybe, maybe up to £75, but anything more than that would be an unreasonable expectation really.

They are just not made to last these days. I would not spend £400 on a Beko product. My Whirlpool fridge freezer is about 15 years old and works quite well.

If the fault that has occured could be considered hazardous in any way, then perhaps take photos of what has happened and plaster the internet with them. Embarass Beko enough that they might want to help with a replacement. Post pictures on CAG, other forums, Facebook, Twitter etc. Beko might just work out that reputational damage may cost them more, than helping towards a replacement.

We could do with some help from you.

IMHO, items such as Fridge/Freezers - Washing Machines - cookers should last a minimum of 10 years.
