I used to find junk mail a huge pain in the rear. Until I began working in the paper industry 15 years ago. Now I figure that the more they send out, the more paper I sell to printers! It then goes straight into recycling.

As for the issue with trees, almost all paper sold in the UK (very few exceptions) come from either recycled material or a sustainable source. The sustainable source is simply a large area set aside where the trees are grown to be harvested - like any other crop, just with a longer cycle. So no worries about destroying forests etc.

I tend to remove the contents of company x and y envelope, put correspondence from x into prepaid envelope from company y and vice versa and put into post box. This then costs them the postage. If everyone did this junk mail would stop asap

I always send the forms back unsigned. A few days later, another pre paid envelope lands on the mat,"sorry, you forgot to sign this form." Send it back unsigned. A few days later........Have had Sun Life yo-yoing for months, lol. Gives me a hobby, keeps Postman Pat in a job, and costs the parasites money. Win-win.

  • 5 weeks later...

I got a well known credit card company to stop hassling me by emailing the CEO telling him that every time I got and email or letter I would email HIM to tell him.

Within DAYS the harassment stopped and I got an apology letter.

So maybe everyone who gets mail should do this, a CEO email is easier to find than their home address

When I shop online, I generally unsubscribe to offers at the same time. I am quite meticulous about reading the wording to see whether I am ticking the box to agree to receiving it or ticking the box to refuse it, (be careful when you do that). I would find it more than a bit annoying if the postman piled loads of junk mail through my letterbox. In fact, I would be inclined to charge the senders for proof reading their garbage. Not to mention the impact on the environment that this total waste of paper entails. At least emails don't waste paper.

If it has my name and address on it, for security reasons, I prefer to shred it which then costs me for electricity and time. One would presume that this mail would have your name and address on since it is personalised to your online buying history. If so, I want compensation from Royal Mail for the cost of shredding all this unwanted paper.

That is always the problem with junk mail, Tryst, if you are going to pop it in recycling then you do first need to check that it doesn't have personal details on it.

So your plan to charge for time and electricity for the shredding is not an unreasonable one.
