JAMIE OLIVER is imposing his own levy on sweet drinks sold in his restaurants in protest at the government’s refusal to introduce a “sugar tax”.

Oliver, the celebrity chef and restaurateur, will add a 10p charge to every drink with added sugar in an attempt to highlight the dangers of too much sugar, as well as sending a message to government to take urgent action on childhood obesity.

He's thought up a way of making extra profit on the backs of kids. If he was really that concerned, he would stop selling sugary drinks altogether.

Will you fall for this and pay extra ?

I wouldn't even step inside one of his rip-off restaurants, £11 for beans on toast.

When you have a couple of kids screaming for their "fix", I can still see parents buying sugary drinks regardless of the extra cost !

Alcoholic drinks have hidden sugar, so I guess he is going to increase prices for that as well.

Jamie has a point, but better to give the information to people, so they can decide.

I probably have too much sugar, as I like a biscuit with a coffee or tea, but I think it is difficult to reduce sugar consumption to what Is recommended. I don't have sugar in hot drinks, don't drink soft drinks that have added sugar and I don't eat cereals with sugar content. i also avoid pasta sauces sold in jars as they contain hidden sugar.

I could not cut sugar out of my diet, as I think it is part of a balanced diet. I don't want to be a skinny pale person that gets colds all the time. I find that health freaks seem to suffer more from colds and flu.

We could do with some help from you.

Yes he may have a point, but the way he is going about making that point is only going to make him extra profit. If he really believes that it is doing no good, then he should stop selling any.

Deliberate to stimulate debate. I thought that all food has natural sugar content, so I hope he is noting the sugar content of all menu items.

All fruit and virtually all veg does, but it also contains all the goodies we need to keep us healthy. It's the refined sugar that is the problem, the stuff that's added to food and drink.

10p is not enough. I'd charge a full pound extra.

That doesn't answer it. If someone feels they strongly about something, they don't think of a way to make extra profit, they stop selling it all together or give the proceeds of the charge to charity, but I notice he isn't doing this either. The man is a fraud.

I see this a tax on the thick, so bring it on. And then, I haven't got the money to go out.
