Noisy Laptop operating system

Hello,

 

 

on the 9 May 2015 I bought a Asus laptop that is working perfectly but it has a noisy (to my ears)operating system.

 

 

I am an Audiophile so the computer has to be more quite than it is.

 

 

I took it back after to Argos after 2 days and explained that it was to noisy for me as I play Classical music and there are a lot of very quite parts.

 

 

To be far I don't think there is anything wrong but it's just a little to noisy.

 

 

The lady did listen to it and said that it was the operating system and so could not get a refund.

 

 

In law is it possible to get a refund do you think.

The OS is software so its impossible for the problem to be that. She's clueless. It's the internal fan and some laptops do get hot so the fan rev s higher than normal.

don't think I've even known a laptop without some background noise coming out of the earphones.

 

 

its not a music player

its a jack of all traders.

 

 

so you've had one before that had no noise?

Thanks for the reply,just found out that the noise is coming from the hard drive,it's obviously a little to noisy for listening to audio at close quarters but thats the way it's made so stuck with it.Regards.

Could always see a specialist and see if its possible to find an SSD and mirror image the harddrive. If its making a noise, it sounds like a hybrid drive. basically a cheap version of an SSD.

must be a noisy hdd! can hardly hear mine (seagate hdd).

A lot more expensive I know but my surface pro 3 is totally silent when running normal operations, the fan does kick in if it's working hard though

I have an ASUS and yes it is more noisy than other laptops I have used. I just don't think ASUS have constructed them in a way that reduces the noise of drivers and the fan. The other problem you may experience is the power adapter. I have had 3 adapters in the 4 years of owning mine. I would suggest that you don't use the laptop when it is being charged. Use it on battery power and invest in better battery so you have more hours of usage.

 

Would probably not buy another ASUS, but many are cheaply made these days and are not supposed to last.

any asus system under 800 is usually knocked up pretty cheaply. When it comes to laptops, you get what you pay for.

What!? If it's making a noise it's a hybrid drive?? Most likely just a normal HDD. Also it will certainly support an SSD. You could either mirror the drive, or reinstall everything.

 

Either way, don't use a laptop if you care about sound quality unless you're using external speakers.

A lot of cheap drives including hybrids do make a fair bit of noise. I still think if its a loud noise its the laptops fan

By way of an overview in case you're not too computer-savvy:

 

Normal hard drives like the one most likely fitted to your laptop contain spinning platters that contain the data you store. By virtue of their need to spin they include a motor that makes noise, usually fairly high-pitched because the drive spins very quickly, usually at either 5400, 7200 or in some cases 10000rpm.

 

Solid State Drives (SSDs) by comparison have no moving parts at all, consequently they're entirely silent. That's a great benefit to them but their primary benefit is performance. While a normal drive relies on a mechanical seeker head moving to the correct location on the disc and reading the data from it, which takes time (and causes noise), an SSD works similarly to your computer's memory, working silently and extremely quickly. It doesn't work quite as quickly as your computer's memory but nearly, and certainly much quicker than a conventional drive would.

 

As the others have already said, the 'problem' is most likely to be the fan. Laptop cooling systems use heat pipes to transfer heat from the components in your system that need cooling to a heat sink. The fan then draws cool air from outside the laptop in, blows it over the heat sink and then exhausts it out the side or back, but, there's a catch-22 situation going on. To make a laptop compact the heat pipes and heat sinks need to be small, but to make them cool efficiently that relies on a fan that can shift a lot of air. To make a small fan shift a lot of air it needs to spin quickly, hence the noise. So, you either have a laptop that's thicker, but runs more quietly, or a thinner one that runs noisier. Obviously that's a very general statement; components, performance, quality, workload, all these and more affect the size and noise of your laptop, but as a general guide it's close enough to give you an idea of what's going on.

 

You could, as a test, install a program called SpeedFan. That will give you control over your laptop's fan speed and will show you what rpm it's spinning at. You could, temporarily, and while keeping an eye on temperatures (which SpeedFan will also tell you), lower the fan speed and ascertain once and for all if it's the fan that's causing your noise problem.

Modern hard drives barely make any noise. Most likely ASUS has overclocked the CPU and the fan is spinning all the time because of heating. Or maybe the sensors don't work properly and report overheating even if it's not there. I usually stay away from Asus and Acer.

Have you tried using headphones??? or indeed wifi speakers, such as VEHO

much better than the squeaky laptop speakers!.

then you be a long way from the laptop.
