Iv got a personnel reason that means i need to sign off JSA for a short period of time.A family friend who lives abroad is ill and i will proberly have to over there.

Can i sign back on at any time after i sign off or do i have to wait a certain amount of time E.G 3 months?

Can i also sign off by phone or do i have to visit my local jobcentre.

Im also on the Work Programme.Would i have to notify them as well?

Give them (your Job Centre ) a phone call to see what they say. Can they just suspend your claim for the period and reopen it when you come back ?

I don't know much about DWP systems and it might be more straightforward than you think. I thought I read that if you reclaimed JSA within 26 weeks or something that you return to the same stage as you were at previous. So there must be some allowance for people to take a break for reasons like this.

You read in the Daily Mail that people claim from abroad. Can you keep claiming, as long as you show that you are looking for work abroad, while you are there ? You could ask and they may laugh.

We could do with some help from you.

For what its worth, in certain circumstances you can continue claiming a range of benefits whilst abroad, jsa working tax credits, housing benefit, although I presume you have looked into this and do not qualify nor wish to continue claiming those benefits for this short period of time.

Yeah i have looked into the above.Im only claiming JSA.No other benefits. It shouldn't be very long that i am away (No more than a month) but i am fairly lucky that i have enough money to last a spell without JSA.

Btw when i do sign back on do i have to go back to my Work Programme provider? I only have about 2 months left there.

If you reclaim within the 2 months you have remaining with the WP provider then yes, you would probably be referred back to them.

It's probably best to call your Jobcentre in the first instance and ask how best to proceed. Maybe they will simply ask you to post them your signing on card (appropriately signed to state you wish to end your claim), or perhaps they would ask you to come in to the JC. I wouldn't bother to discuss this with them at all until you have a definite date for leaving the UK, provided you'll be able to attend all required appointments at the JC and your WPP until then.

There is no minimum time you have to wait before reclaiming - you can sign off the day you leave the country and sign back on the day after you get back if you wish.

Probably another silly question bus as soon as i sign off do i have to tell the Work Programme or do the jobcentre tell them?

I don't suppose you have to tell them, but it might be best to drop them a short note so they don't schedule any appointments while you're away. No need to go into any detail, just a one line letter will do. Eventually, though, JCP will let them know in any case.

Oh, one other question - do you happen to know if you live in one of the areas where Universal Credit is being rolled out? And, for that matter, does anyone know if this could be a concern where there is a short break in a JSA claim?

IL send the Work Programme an email as soon as i sign off telling them i have signed off.I have a feeling they can see on their system when somebody has signed off.

I am fairly certain i am in one of the areas(The Thames Valley)where Universal Credit is not being being rolled out.Well for the time being at least.

There shouldn't be any need to inform the W.P. provider that you have signed off. The DWP should do that under the guise of a "change of circumstances".... But knowing how efficient some government departments are, it may be as well to send the email yourself. However, you are under no obligation to give a reason to either the W.P. provider or the DWP. "Personal reasons" is sufficient, covers a multitude of sins, and keeps them guessing.

The press would have a field day if they found out that that had actually happened.I was just checking as i don't want Maximus to raise some sort of doubt against me when i have to sign back on although i don't have much time left on the Work programme.I'm just over thinking it.

The only time you are obliged to engage with a Work Programme provider is when you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit. From the moment your claim is closed, there is no legal basis for any contact to be maintained. So you are correct, emails, letters, SMS texts, and phone calls can be ignored. Personal visits by their staff should be handled in the appropriate manner.

I know they are desperate for information but surely even the Work Programme providers wouldn't turn up at somebodys house.Turn up at mine and they will get a bucket of water over their head.

There have been cases of the WP showing up at somebody's door, believe me a bucket of water is far too tame in my humble opinion!

A polite request followed by a warning that reasonable force may be used should suffice. What constitutes "reasonable force" is very much dependent on the prevailing conditions and the perceived threat of the intruder. If you feel at risk of physical harm or that there may be a breach of the peace, then the best course of action is to telephone the police and let them deal with it.

What ever course of action you pursue, if you intend to reclaim JSA within three months, you may have to return to the Work Programme provider :yuck:

On the plus side, any/all time spent away should count towards your two year W.P. sentence.

I only have about 5 weeks left on the Work programme thankfully.

It might not be such a relief.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-announces-details-of-post-work-programme-support

"Claimants will be expected to be on a training scheme, Mandatory Work Activity placement or intensive work preparation within days of finishing on the Work Programme – losing their benefit if they fail to comply. An extra £30m will be available to pay for extra training and specialist help to prepare them for work, for instance counselling for people dependent on drug and alcohol.

Claimants will also have to attend the Jobcentre far more frequently than other jobseekers, with weekly signing on being routine and some people being required to meet their adviser every day.

The advisers, who will be focused on working with those returning from the Work Programme, will take a tough approach to monitoring whether claimants are sticking to their plan with anyone failing to participate losing their benefits."
