Not quite sure which forum to put this one but I think its worth sharing....

Over the last few weeks, we appear to be getting an increased level of cold calls and known [problem] calls.

Some on mobiles but some on main home land-line.

Not unusual in itself but it appears that there may be new technology out there, that spoofs your caller display into showing you a number with your own towns dialing pre-fix. When you see a call coming in from your own town, you naturally think its a genuine call.

We've had 2 separate calls this week where we actually hung on until someone spoke at the other end. One caller claimed to be able to get us pre-assigned government compensation if anyone in our family had worked in construction or a factory and the other one claiming to be from Microsoft who wanted to speak to the owner of our home PC.

Put the phone down on the first one and the 2nd one put the phone down on us (we were playing dumb)

Googling the number after, shows that there is no record of the number on any of the "Who Calls Me" type of websites or registered against any genuine business

It would be interesting to know if anyone else has been caught out by this.

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...

the 'spoofed' phone number - this can easily be done through services such as VOIP and the technology for spoofing the callers number has been available for several years.

After being plagued by up to 6 - 10 calls a day we bought the BT8500 home phones, you can set these up to either caller announce, ignore or transfer to answerphone on unavailable, international & withheld numbers.

You can also block individual numbers and also programme to allow specific numbers straight through.

Pricey but well worth the investment.

Stigman

NEVER telephone a DCA

If a DCA rings you, refuse to go through the security questions & hang up!

I agree wholeheartedly with Stigman I too have a BT8500 best thing ever, not one unwanted call since and its cheeaper than a truecall , I bought a twin handset for less than £50, I wish I had bought

a quad set.
