I have recieved a letter today from Regal Credit Consultants Ltd addressed

to "the occupier" asking me to call a Mrs King regarding "a very important matter".

I haven't called her and don't intend to

but I wondered if anybody else has had one of these letters

and may be able to shed some light on what they're up to?

It's not a postcard it's a proper letter in an envelope. As far as I can recall I've never had any dealings with these people. Also if it's me or OH they want to contact why not put our names on the letter?

Sounds like a fishing letter if you ask me.

No doubt if you phone them they will ask you to confirm your name/number/DOB etc.

They can then directly start firing letters at you instead of 'the occupier' assuming you have a debt with them.

and against the law

Deceptive and/or unfair methods

2.7 Dealings with debtors are not to be deceitful and/or unfair.

2.8 Examples of unfair practices are as follows:

a. sending demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question, e.g. threatening debt recovery action to 'the occupier' or sending a payment demand to all people sharing the same name/date of birth as a debtor in the hope that contact with the correct debtor will be made.

b. disclosing debt details to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question, e.g. disclosing details to 'the occupier' of an address.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just ignore the letter as I intended originally. As far as I am aware they have no business with me or partner and if they're trying to trace previous owners of the house I have no information about then anyway (and wouldn't tell them if I did!)

What I'm worried about is are they likely to persist with this (more letters, phone calls, even visiting the house) and do I have any recourse if they do?

  • 3 months later...

Hey I got one of those letters, probably tracing the previous owners. Thought I might just send a very vague letter asking to phone me ( one of those [problem] numbers that rack up your phone bill ). Also not to stamp the envelope and address it to head office and not the PO box. I assume the post office will charge them for the postage, we always fall for something like that thinking it might be important.
