In the course of examining our church accounts I noticed that there was a huge difference in water charges for the 2 Anglican churches in our Parish. The lower charge is for the church without mains drainage. The other church has meters water and used only 9 cubic metres last year. As a domestic consumer I use about 110 cubic metres. Because it is classed as non-domestic the church pays a standing charge of £144 pa compared with £87 for me.

This seems grossly unfair. Can we challenge this charge?

Water Company charges are agreed by the regulator OFWAT and are payable by all customers so no I cannot see how you can challenge this.

Only way to avoid this is to have the supply safeguarded (turned off) but this may not be practical for you depending on what the water is used for and will incur a one off fee to have this done probably.
