Wondering if anybody can help, our house was bought in my wifes and her mothers names, it is fully paid off, (no mortgage etc) but my wifes mother recently passed away and we dont know how to change the ownership, we were told to just use land registry but cant find anything on there that fits the bill

any help appreciated

Hello there. I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

 

I don't know if this will help or not, but I believe houses are normally bought either as joint tenants or as tenants in common. This my understanding, but you'll find plenty online about it.

 

If your wife is joint tenant, then the property automatically passes to her because her mum has passed away. If it's a tenancy in common, your MiL's share will be dealt with under her will.

Why not telephone Land Registry - they were very helpful when I spoke to them.
