Whoever told you about the seat belts not locking when pulled is an MOT failure is not telling the truth or they don't know and are guessing. It's not testable and for information some belts, notably those from BL vehicles only lock when the car dips under braking, so you can pull them as hard and fast as you want and by design they won't lock.

 

Is the chassis corrosion in a prescribed area (think a sphere 30 cm in radius) for anything that could affect the suspension or steering?

 

If you're basing your argument on their advice, you're heading for a fall and I sincerely hope that the company, whose reputation you are maligning will get adequate recompense.

I've just watched it through, your MOT tester has incorrectly failed the seat belts, the locking mechanism refers to the buckle. Method of inspection is :

 

5. a. Fasten each belt locking mechanism and try to pull the locked sections apart. Operate the release mechanism while pulling on the belt to check that the mechanism releases when required

 

b. on retracting seat belts, check that with the mechanism fastened and the seat unoccupied, excess webbing iswound into the retracting unit.

 

With the corresponding refusal:

 

5. a. The locking mechanism of a seat belt does not secure or release as intended

 

b. a retracting mechanism does not retract the webbing sufficiently to remove all the slack from the belt with the locking mechanism fastened and the seat unoccupied.

 

As the garage have incorrectly failed your vehicle, are you going to appeal to VOSA and drop them in it as well?

Exactly j66, the op contradicts much. I too know about the BL seat belts. The corrosion issues are very debatable and subjective but are there (30 cm rule) because it's deemed that a run of the mill tester could not make an objective decision as to how the area will react under adverse use conditions. Take it from me that the front spring hangers will be fine as they are reinforced in that area and the impact loads they absorb will be distributed not through the area which is corroded but elsewhere.

His video like that of the specialist is just a joke.

The OP really has got it in for JB's here and really ought to be careful with what he posts and where.

When you buy a used motor vehicle from a trader, you enter into a legally binding contract. You are entitled to expect that the vehicle is of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. An older vehicle with high mileage may not be as good as a newer vehicle with low mileage, but it should still be fit for use on the road and in a condition that reflects its age and price.

Which bit of " An older vehicle with high mileage may not be as good as a newer vehicle with low mileage" is missing off your actors script.

even if corrosion is present around the seatbelt mounting its not a big issue, had this issue on a R reg nissan terrano2 over the last week or so, welded a new plate direct to the mounting (not the best method i know) and its passed no issue - 1 hour or so's work
