Hi,

Wonder if anyone can assist,

I have just discovered that my meter reading is totally wrong,

and I only found out when I asked the guy changing the meter what was the correct reading,

considering EDF has not read my meter since 2010

I have just being going on estimations which was my fault,

now I am something like 13,300 kws over which I assume is about £2000

I cannot pay this as I am on ESA,

what can I do,

will I get in trouble for this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Mashmallow

They should read the meter at least every two years, if not more. Two years is a minimum. You need to check if they have attempted to read the meter. You can send them a SAR request, they will send you at least 6 years data. You can check to see if the Backbilling Code applies.

http://www.energy-uk.org.uk/publication/finish/43-code-of-practice-for-accurate-bills/412-the-code-of-practice-for-accurate-bills-back-billing-for-domestic-customers.html

Apply to the EDF Trust, see if they can right off, some or all the debt as you are a vulnerable person.

http://www.edfenergytrust.org.uk/

Make sure your on the lowest tariff with EDF, explain that your a 'vulnerable' customer.

Compare their cheapest tariff to other companies via comparison site.

Let us know how you get on.

Thread moved to correct forum.

Hi mashmallow

You'll need to send £10.

http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/content.php?552-Data-Protection

If they send any letters, update this thread. You can't give them something you don't have.

Hi mashmallow

Go to :- Library - Templates - Bank Charges Templates - Data Protection Act 1998. Subject Access Request.

Would you be classed as a 'Vulnerable customer'? Are you unemployed, do you suffer from illness etc?

I cannot open this link to read, I guess they could take the meter away and leave me wit no electric or put in a key meter, can they???

  • 2 months later...

Hi,

Any advice would do,

I live in a bedsit, I am using 13 Kw per day don't know how,

it is summer I do not have a bath

all I have running is my TV when I watch it,

fridge yes,

microwave,

lights,

two cooker hobs now and again when I cook that is about it.

Why is the meter running up this cost,

I really cannot understand,

could it be possible the meter is faulty

or something doggy going one.

Any ideas apparently my bill is £200 every 3 months?

are you sure the meter number on the bill is the same one?

we often find they have the wrong meter number or its feeding others too.

can you drop your breaker on the consumer unit and check it stops flashing and incrementing?

{the meter]

Hi

1. On your bill it will have the actual meters serial number - make sure this matches with your actual meters serial number (you need to check this matches)

2. Have you been giving them the meter readings or are they estimating it?

3. What type of heating do you have in the property?

4. What Tariff does is say you are on?

I will, call EDF to investigate,

I am on standard tariff which I am going to change to Blue Price Promise,

I have one storage heater which is off.

Apparently the Council charge 9.00 per week to everyone for the heating which comes on automatically in September

and is switched off in April, how this works don't ask me.

The readings are correct.

One other thing what is the breaker. I will also check the serial number soon.

Thanks

an alternative is to switch off everything for 2 hours and see if the meter has moved.

If it has switch off the mains at the isolator-fuse box and leave it for another 2 hours and see what the meter says.

If you have an earthing problem you can get leakage that will eat up your money.

Any electrician can check that and then check your appliances for a reversed connection- lighting circuits are often switched differently-

Also, when your electric is off

check any lights etc in hallways

or other common areas

it may be you are paying for someone else's electricity.

can i ask how long this has been going ON?

have you just moved in?

NO

I have been there 2 years and always got big bills

but now £400 has been charged and cannot pay it,

the first bill was for £450 which charis helped me with,

I did not stay there for about 1 year because of disrepair but lost the case with the council.

I must be ruuning a tropical fish shop.

It is averaging about £220 every 3 months and for someone who does not use the hot water on a daily bases

or has a bath and lives in one room with kitchen & bathroom this seems very steep

I know December to April 2013 were pretty cold and wet

but if your readings are correct that works out at 2618 units

I live in a 3 bed semi, its a fairly new house, but we have an electric oven and a tumble drier

and during that same period my electric consumption was just over 1600 units.

So either you are using a lot of electric or there is a fault with the meter

- are you sure you are not supplying electricity to the whole house!

Seems like it as I mentioned it is a small bedsit only one sleeping/living room, bathroom ad kitchen.

I have

2 table top hobs to cook on which I hardy use,

a microwave,

washing machine which is only used once a week,

TV and

storage heater (1)

1 ordinary electric heater which I have not used for some time.

One thing I am not sure of is there is a cupboard outside the flats

which has a council meter which is switch on in September when apparently the heating is turned on.

I am contacting EDF but afraid they may come out with I will have to pay to get it checked out

and I cannot afford an electrician I am on ESA.

Thanks
