There are people who don't know how to cook from scratch but no amount of cooking skills will help if you can't afford to buy the food needed to cook a meal. The problem with people like Jenkins is that they think that poor people are poor because they are thick and badly brought up (by thick parents). She really isn't in the real world and needs to come down from her ivory tower.

What an insult!! I daresay some can't cook, but often people with little food become more creative with their recipes to make what little food they may have stretch further, and as already said, you need money to buy food in the first place!

It's a stupid comment, it has no relationship with food banks at all. People go to food banks because they haven't got enough money to buy food to support their families, low paid, jobless, elderly etc.

shameful when you see this attitude of our elected MPs and the House of Lords so many starving in our country having to depend on the generosity of these foodbanks.

Not everything, rent and council tax already paid for instance, i am by no means posh, and did have a spell on the £220 every 2 weeks and i actually found it very comfortable, but then i can cook, It is amazing that some of the poorest people can afford to buy cigarettes, alcohol and the odd take away. I am not judging anyone, just saying i have been their, and no it was not easy, but it was really not that bad either.

I can cook from 'scratch' and it was very useful when I was on the minimal benefits after working solidly since I was 16.... it was difficult sometimes and I had to 'go without' quite a lot once things ran out or broke, but luckily there is a very good local freecycle where I am...

 

At least I didn't have to pay the likes of Brighthouse for electrical goods.

 

I think the MP who said that is in a dream world (aren't they all) and hopefully people won't vote for her in the elections.

I must admit it does annoy me when you see these programmes where people complain they only receive such and such pw. You've got to add on the bills that dont need to be paid or are heavily subsidised and then gross it up to see what you would need to earn to be in the same position. The picture then doesnt seem to bad.

 

What annoys me is people like Jenkins who receive hugh salaries and expenses that are more than many peoples wages, critisising those who arent in the same financial position.

Emphasis here being "pay towards". Many don't pay full rent and full CT. Therefore you need to take into account what they would be paying without CT benefit and HB and then gross it up to the wage they would need to cover full rent and full CT.

Tezza, we had to pay bedroom tax so did not get full h/b and we also had to pay some towards the council tax, we do not smoke/drink etc but still had to pay for gas, electric, water etc, yes you can do it if you are careful and we often wondered how others seemed to manage to go out, smoke, drink, have holidays etc and not get sanctioned but I was warned look for a job or you will be sanctioned :o

Don't forget, she gets Jeeves to prepare the 4p porridge, Jeeves is on the minimum wage, so in essence she has to factor in the cost of Jeeves.

Also bear in mind a lot of people who find them selves unemployed never thought they would be or had very little notice.

 

Amazes me when people critise unemployed or welfare claimants for having things like the latest smart phone or Sky tv. It is highly unlikely that unemployment happened right at the end of their contracts, And as we know, you are locked into a minimum subscription. Also we cannot compare or own circumstances to everyone. One poster mentioned the bedroom tax. Another may have children. One may be a single parent. Another may have financial obligations we do not. Others may have savings they can dip into or family support while others may have nothing and noone.

 

Please bear this in mind before implying things like "I lived on benefits for a while and If i can cope it is not that hard so everyone should be able to do it too"
