Bought a Toshiba laptop in April 2014, on my Argos card along with the 3 year protection. Keyboard was acting funny, and my passwords were always missing a letter. Now it has crashed altogether, and the recovery disks were stored, as I thought on my clickfree, but apparently it doesn't backup programme data. Went over to Argos, thinking I would get a replacement, girl told me to go home and ring the breakdown line. rang them, they said that because it was under a year old, it should be Toshiba, she put me through to them. Apparently, it will cost me to get a repair, or even for Toshiba to look at it, £31 for recovery disks, and another fee for them to look at the keyboard. I am totally lost without my laptop, and I thought paying the extra £169 was my security if it broke down. Any ideas

do you mean their 'breakdown care'? seems as if that is re things 'outside' of a manufacturers warranty?

but, as a distributor you wld be entitled to request that argos 'deals' with the matter re warranty. but, is it a fault or software/user input/virus or accidental 'damage'?

then there is the SOGA

how did you pay for the item, credit card?

I bought it on my Argos Card, it just crashed last week, and it won't reboot, and it has a faulty keyboard, so it was going back anyway.

is the argos card a credit card?

if faulty, then argos can deal with it sending it to tosh if necessary, no need for you to go direct to toshiba. up to you.

there shouldnt be a charge for a fault. and, if re accidental damage then yr argos cover shld cover it?

I know they should, but toshiba are saying that I would have to pay for an engineer to look at it, even though it is under a year old

presume then argos card is a credit card, you didnt answer that q.

if so, cld consider s75 if argos are not being consumer friendly.

good luck.

  • 4 weeks later...

Returned to Argos for the second time, and they replaced it, no problem. Just goes to show, it depends on the member of staff that you talk to

Keep in mind for the future, it is always the place of purchase that is responsible. Sometimes the large sellers do have a contract with the manufacturer to deal with any problems and this works for the majority of cases, but sometimes, as in your case, it didn't.

Even if a seller has a contract with the manufacturer, you do not have to use them as said earlier, it is the seller who must deal with it.

Congratulations on getting a replacement, now the very first thing you 'must' do is to make a set of recovery discs. Type 'recovery discs' into the charms search and you will be given full instructions. Having a set of recovery discs will make your laptop more desirable to any buyer should you sell it at some time in the future.

Do this even if it does have a recovery partition.
