    • I am writing this on behalf of an elderly relative, a lady in her 90s, my partner's mother who is living alone in sheltered accommodation.   Somehow, several years ago, she found herself with a phone/broadband contract with a company called Clear Business - we don't really know how and she didn't have any means to access the internet so we gave her an old iPad and tried to show her what she could do but she mainly used it for playing Mah Jong solitaire so we didn't find out until a few months ago that the internet had not been working for some time.   My partner tried to contact the company to get the internet sorted out but to cut a long part of the story short, they didn't fix it. My partner told the company that if they didn't sort it out, she was going to migrate to another provider. It wasn't fixed so the phone and broadband service were migrated to Plusnet - less than half the monthly charge, I might add.   Now the company is demanding payment of £600 (£300 for phone and £300 for broadband) for early termination of the contract - kind of ironic that their website claim to provide all services for 'one low cost bill' and the company seem to provide utility packages for businesses - so how have they ended up providing telephone and broadband to a lady in her 90s in a single bedroomed sheltered apartment for more than twice the market rate for domestic users. I can only imagine that she was cold called and taken advantage of.   I left a review on TrustPilot reflecting what has happened and it seemed to create a bit of attention as there seemed to be some attempt to resolve the matter but since then, they have been phoning her and causing distress. My partner is doing her best to deal with it all.   I just looked at the TrustPilot reviews and they don't really make any sense, customers are either leaving one star reviews or five star reviews with very little in between and all the five star reviews have started to make me think that they may be fake - they all mention somebody's first name. Most have only ever left one review and those which have left more all seem to have left the same kind of review, e.g. 'Spoke with Robert this morning, he was great. Very helpful.'   I get angry when I get bad customer service but when I see somebody vulnerable get treated like this I get furious.

    • We have paid it as fees would keep being added. I dont think I have made myself clear so I will start again. We purchased a flat with a sitting tenant in April. The management company for the building have been sending bills for servic charge to the flat instead of our home address. We were not aware of the bills but were expecting to pay the service charges. A week ago my wife was in the flat because there was no hot water and the tenant is in hospital. she notices a letter with our name on so opened it. it was a bill for the service charges of £578 and arrears which seem to be before we owned the flat. she tried to call both payment and normal office number but got an answerphone so left a message to call her back. Today we received a letter from the management companies solicitors stating we would need to pay just over £3000 for the original outstanding £578. We phoned them and they said we need to pay £1418.68 which we did as the stress is too much with fear of additional charges on top. This is made up of original £578 plus 2 admin fees totaling to £920 then a legal fee of £498.   They say they didnt have an address for us except for the flat address but the tenant was binning the letters rather than passing them on.   My question is: Who should have passed over details to the management company? is it the conveyancing solicitors as if so I would like to sue for negligence and get this extra cost compensated.

The following story appears on SCOOP today:

 

Officers from Camden Council were left red-faced after High Court enforcement officers gained entry to the town hall last Wednesday and began seizing thousands of pounds worth of local authority owned TVs, computers and printers to repay approx £7,000 owed to a resident.

Good to hear that this chap got the money he was owed. But as always, it should never get to this situation.

 

At some stage I can see councils going bust technically, although the government would bail them out. In Spain, some of the regional governments have gone bust and have had to receive money to keep the afloat.

 

Council tax is being frozen at the moment in many areas and has been for sometime. In the meantime councils are incurring increased costs, which they don't have the money for. I suspect that this cash Camden handed over, was from the tills at the council tax collection office, which had received the cash during the day. As I doubt they would have cash in their office normally.

“I think I might be one of the first people to send bailiffs to the council. They didn’t bother to turn up to the court case so they’ve only got themselves to blame.

 

“It’s ironic because it’s exactly what they do to other residents who fail to pay their council tax or parking fines on time.

 

“This is giving them a taste of their own medicine.”

 

In a furious letter sent to Mr Gethin the following day, the council’s lawyers described his action as “shocking” and said his claim was “unfounded”.

I would be interested to know which company was involved. Any company who enforce against a local authority in this way would know perfectly well that the chances of getting any contracts in the future would be NIL.

 

Then on the other hand it could be 'well they got it from us so must be able to get it from anyone'.

I note that Camden them throw even more money down the drain by hiring lawyers to write silly letters to Mr Gethin asking him to give the money back as they dont like being clobbered for ignoring the law. No doubt they will spend more money aon an appeal when they should have just sacked the incompetent idiot who ignored all of the correspondence

Yes, I am for real. Councils are trying to find ways to make up for the money they don't get from central government. So they apply all these parking charges and don't pay amounts that they owe people.

They deserved a taste of their own medicine. Are Camden a Crapita infested council? Their sheer arrogance would suggest that it was infested by the Crapita virus.

As all regulars on here will know, for the debt to have reached the stage where a High Court Enforcement Agent is in attendance there must have been a LOT of previous stages that 'appear' to been ignored and I would suspect that somebody within the council will have some explaining to do. My own personal opinion....

Have to agree BA with one proviso, councils feel they are above the law, and would be so complacent and confident that no one would dare to set baiiliffs on them that they wouldn't even worry about not paying or ignoring a CCJ. Especially a Capita infested council.
