Hi everyone

I'm seeking advice on the following

I have just purchased a Car from a previous owner who was disabled and as such was car tax exempt.

Will i need to re-tax the car once i have received back the log book ?

Thank you in advance

Yes. The vehicle taxation class would have been disabled. When you change the owner I think it will change it back to normal. Either petrol or diesel vehicle.

Which will make the disabled tax invalid.

Or at least that's what I think.

Yep as soon as the disabled person surrenders the car then the tax disc will become once again liable for either SORN or taxed. Presumably you will have received the log book on the day your bought/took over the car in which case you will be liable from the beginning of that month.

When the owner of a tax exempt car sells the car (privately) it is prudent to ascertain if new owner qualifies for tax exemption. If this is the case, then simply complete the V5 and send it off to dvla.

If the car is sold to a non disabled person, then send back tax disc and V5.

The new owner has to send the V5 back to notify change of taxation class and to tax the car at normal rates
