Hiya,

Recently we received a letter from a company calling themselves "Absolute Locate"

which suggested that they required us to verify some information.

We rang these people to be told that an organisation calling themselves "Global"

(for some reason they said that one name was the only one they and omitted the "Debt Recovery" part of Global Debt Recovery)

had contacted them and we were given the phone number for the latter.

(As an aside I have a feeling that Absolute Locate and Global Debt are actually the same company under two different names.)

We rang Global Debt to be told that they had been instructed to collect two outstanding debts from 1997.

The people we spoke to from Global Debt were obnoxious (in our opinion),

especially when we suggested that debts from 1997 were probably statute barred.

We were told the debts were not statute barred because we had moved and not informed the creditors of our new address.

We were then accused of having deliberately "hidden" to avoid paying the debt - we did not.

We moved house because it was a rental property and we were asked to vacate it.

Both debts are, purportedly, from a bank account.

We are not sure if these debts actually existed (it's almost 20 years ago), but have no recollection of any overdrafts

or loans with the bank we told we have a debt with.

We have spoken to the bank and they cannot see anything on their computers

- the lady we spoke to suggested that the bank doesn't pursue debts after about five or six years

and also that it sounded like a [problem] to her from the information we had.

We would be grateful for any advice or comment.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to CAG :-)

What they told you is absolute rubbish.

From what you have said these would be Statutory Barred.

You say you have no recollection of these so would not now whether they are for credit cards/loans or and overdraft? The reason I ask is that for overdrafts the SB date is worked out differently to others).

So I would stop talking to these people on the phone as Debt Collection Agencies will tell you anything to frighten you into paying.

I would ignore them until something more substantial comes through.

Thank you both very much.

Something I forgot to mention yesterday is that Global told us that one of the two debts already has a CCJ - if it does then it must be an old one as there isn't anything on our credit file about it.

They also mentioned that they'll be sending us two letters. When the letters do arrive what do you think would be the best thing to do? Ignore them completely or send them a statute barred letter in return?

The debts definitely aren't credit cards and we can't see how they could be loans or overdrafts either since we only had a basic account (as far as we can remember) with Lloyds TSB and our credit rating wasn't very good then and find we're questioning whether these debts really do exist, especially after speaking to the bank.

What is showing about these debts on your credit file?

As far as we're aware there isn't anything at all about them, though we shall have another look over the weekend.

Scan the letters up? Do you mean post them here?

It's OK my previous message was just things we'd forgotten to mention - there hasn't been any further phone calls and neither will there be thank you.

The letters as below:

Dear us

Reference:

Client: FV-1

Account Number:

We are today appointed as agents for the collection of the above debt.

You should now remit the full amount due. Any delay on your part may give cause for further costly recovery action and refusal of additional credit to you.

Yours sincerely

Collections Department

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Both letters are the same but for different amounts.

Who's FV 1? We've never heard of them.

After searching the internet it seems that what this company does is buy old statute barred debts (for very little) and then try to collect the full amount for them.

As mentioned earlier, we're still unsure whether these debts actually are ours since we have no recollection of owing anything to Lloyds TSB. We're considering sending a letter making it clear that we do not acknowledge these debts, that we don't think they are ours, and that they are statute barred anyway.

Would that be best?

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!
