I am renting a room and stupidly signed my name to the gas, electric and TV bills and I am leaving at the end of this month.

The other tenants have money problems and cant sign their names to the bills. Further to this one of the other residents is a idiot who does not want to pay bills preferring to spend it on cannabis. He has told me this month he cannot pay a bill and I suspect that he is not planning to pay the bills when I leave at the end of the month leaving me out of pocket.

I am planning not to pay the bills so that the gas and electric may be cut off. This would then presumably cause the companies to seek the money from me by legal means. The reason I could do this is it would force the tenants to pay me to avoid a reinstallation cost. What do you suggest?

This is stressful.

Bad move. Unfortunately you are legally responsible for this bill. Just leave, and tell the utilities companies that you have left and are no longer resident at the property. Give them the meter readings as they were when you left. When you leave, take the other tenants to small claims - I think a court would give you the bill amount.
