Car Stolen Without Keys - Will They Pay Out ?

Hello all,

 

last week my car was stolen from my driveway, my keys where on me, (spare locked away in house) i was out from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon, coming back home i noticed my car was not there.

i was thinking that it most probably was towed via a van, however the police said they saw it on ONE camera the Saturday night (after id already left the house" . so i am wondering how they've done it and I've read some horror stories on here and on-line where insurers wont pay out because they say you cant drive the car without the proper key. this is causing me a lot of stress as the thought of not getting my car back or not getting paid out is really getting to me. i have had no further update from the police and the insurance company are awaiting my documents and keys.

the car is a Honda civic type r (2010) and the insurer is Admiral.

i have no problems in the past, no claims, no criminal record nothing at all but the stories i have read on the internet are scary to say the least.

please advice or help

Hello, I was told by honda that they cannot get data from a key as that would be my first guess. the make and model is honda civic type r 2010 model

im not sure i want to give all these details to be honest, im just looking for advice as to how the claim will go ?

It is possible to defeat the immobiliser if you are technically savvy and have the tools to do it. It would probably take 10 minutes.

 

If every insurer in the land refused every claim with the same circumstances as yours there would be riots.

 

I am sure you will be fine. Especially with a company like Admiral who have a reputation to preserve rather than a bottom feeder struggling to make a profit.

some of the things im reading are scary though, like there was one with a simular case to mine but they examined his keys and said it was that key used to drive it, even though it wasn't, i wasn't even aware you can tell this infomation from keys.

Careful with what you read. It will only be the people that had problems that will post up.

 

Nobody says YAY! - my insurance paid out because my car was stolen without the keys. We all take that for granted and that is what we pay premiums for.

 

So anything you read will pretty much be negative and much more likely from the cheapest underwriters who will be looking for an excuse not to pay out.

 

Your result will be very unlikely to be the same.

Sadly it was from Admiral aswell =[ they said they did testing on his car key and it showed the mileage was only around 3000 which contradicted the mileage on his car. what infomation can specialists retreive from transponder keys ? does anyone know ?

Stop thinking that Insurance companies are bogeymen looking to find ways to decline claims. If people keep on saying this online, then some will believe it. There will always be a certain number of claims that are declined, mostly because the policyholder has not given accurate information. When these people report this online, they don't often tell you the full story and there could be perfectly good reasons why the Insurers are not paying out. You don't hear the other side of the story, where hundreds of thousands of claims are paid out on each year, without any problems at all.

 

Give accurate information to Insurers at all times and you have nothing to fear. Cars can be stolen without keys. The Insurers would have no reason to believe that you have done something which has led to the car being stolen. Car thieves these days have access to devices that can switch off immobilisers and they can get around not having the key. Not very many cars are 100% secure. When you get a replacement, you would be wise to invest in a decent quality alarm and perhaps security lights outside of your house.

It is possible to steal a car without the keys. Firstly, you have to get into the car (even smashing a window will do that !), then you need a laptop type electronic diagnostic tool to override the immobiliser system. These are expensive and require specialist knowledge. So much so, that some people are now fitting locks to the socket that this equipment plugs into. If you've got both of the original keys, then it would be difficult for the Insurance company to refute your claim. Don't worry.

The thing insurers want to know is did you take reasonable steps to avoid the loss. By having both sets of keys in your possession the answer is yes.

Ok, So quick update...... everything has been going ok so far, they have received all my documents, keys etc. they've spoken to my finance company to get a settlement figure. then Strangley they rang me yesterday to ask "how do you enter the car is it keyless entry" to which i replied "No"

they then asked "and how do you start the car is it ignition" to which i replied "Yes"

 

They then said "ok thats great we will pass this on to our engineers and if everything is ok then it will go to our manager for a final review"

 

What the Hell ??
