Council asking for bank statements

Hi

Just need some general advise I am a landlord who rented out a property. The tenants left without paying council tax and therefore I became liable for the debt. However I have sent them copies of tenancy agreements which indicate that the tenant was liable for the debt. They have now emailed me back stating that they require proof that the tenants actually lived there i.e. bank statements, forwarding address and any other info.

My question is am I legally bound to provide this information?

Regards

You're not legally bound to provide it at this stage but if you don't you run the risk of being taken to court and then you'll pretty much have to provide it if you want to avoid liability. If you have this evidence why not provide it and help to sort the matter out?
