neighbour has a 21yrs old son

he got caught last year

driving alone on provi licence.

[one off silly mistake whilst parents were away]

got 6 points for no ins/£200 fine.

all done paid ended

he has now passed his test

they want to allow him to drive their second [wifes] car

she has her own full comp insurance on it.

she is the owner/keeper

can he be put on her insurance as named driver?

can he get his own full comp insurance to drive the same car?

if he does do they have to tell the wifes insurance provider?

can you have two separate policies on the same car?

sorry not my game

They can put him on as a named driver but would need to declare the conviction. It's up to the insurance company to assess the risk and they might decline it. Then they might accept it as well but I'd expect the premium to be very high. Insurers are not to happy about this sort of situation as often it's abused where the son becomes the main driver.

He won't get fully comp or any insurance of his own for the same car as it's already owned and insured. Can never work out why this shouldn't apply as they are insuring the driver. I'm not aware that you can get two policies for the same car but stand to be corrected.

Best bet is for the son to get insurance for a group one car to build up no claims but at the cost of his street cred. It's tough for youngsters these days but unfortunately they bring it on themselves.

the main driver bit is what worries me too.

he would most prob be classed as the main driver

as its a second family car, not often used by his mother

he would be using it for college and domestic.

having spoken again

he has today used a couple of the comparison sites

and they have indeed offered him a quote on the same car

even putting down its already owned/insured & driven by his mother.

coming it at about £630 he can swallow that

they have asked the wifes insurers but they don't insure under 25's

the two insurances on one car is what bothers me too.

Agree.

There is nothing stopping there being 2 policies on the same car, but as he would not be owner or registered keeper,

most Insurers would not insure him.

I don't think they would be particularly happy to provide a standard policy,

when they know that the owner/registered keeper has their own policy.

Some temporary type policies allow you to insure yourself as the driver of a car owned by someone else.

It is going to be better for the son to have a cheap small engine car to insure for himself.

It will start out being really expensive and will get better as time goes on, providing he behaves himself.

We could do with some help from you.

Suggest that he phones the Insurers who have quoted on the comparison to make sure they are happy with the basis for that quote. If it sounds to be good to be true etc. It does not sound right. I don't believe he can get comp cover for £630 as a newly qualified driver 21 years of age, with 6 points on his licence. I think some of the info for the quote must be wrong.

ok thanks you two.

its looking like this might happen:

mother transfers ownership of car to son

cancels her existing insurance [will there be a cancellation fee?]

then son gets his own insurance

the mother has fully comp on another car, which would give her 3rd party on it

if she wanted to use it once in a blue moon?

how does that sound guys?

I've seen the quote and checked it

£618 with mother as named other driver

£630 without her

it is only a smartcar [08 reg]

Still sounds pretty cheap. I would suggest that he runs through the details with the Insurers who have provided the quote to make sure it is correct.

Personally I'd do it in a more simple way is that son becomes main driver with mum a named driver. Most policies allow an additional two drivers so might get dad, if he's been a good boy too, added. This shows some sort of stability I think.

Be wary of the 3rd party cover on the mums policy as it probably states road traffic act only like most policies which means damage to humans, not the car or third party property.

I'd have said that's not unreasonable but depends on age of car and miles and where it is.

The big thing is....will the son want to be seen in a Smart car!!!

Usually a cancellation fee these days.

If they transfer ownership to Son, if she wants to drive it occasionally, it would be better for her to be a named driver on Sons policy. The Insurers often quite like having a mature driver with access to the car that is mainly driven by a young driver. It is not recommended using third party driving other cars cover provided by another policy.

Agreed. When my son was about 25 (couple of years ago) with 3 points for speeding, he was quoted about £830 to insure an H reg fiesta. He'd always been on either my insurance or gf before so no NCD.

yes he loves it!

it was brought for him in 08 but sadly the family had serious health issues and

plans on getting him through his test never happened for several years.

ofcourse if he did get his own insurance it would be checked by phone first.

mothers existing insurance on the smartcar does not allow under 25's

so son will have to get his own, with mother as named driver

what about the transfer of car ownership?

Transfer is quite straight forward, just fill out the V5 and send to DVLC. Had to do it with my Saxo when I started to use it more. Transfer from wife to husband. Problem is it showed another owner but in reality this was true (even though I paid for it)

but as with it all it'll be done on the phone to check everything

the last thing they need is the mother not being insured to drive it.

Is that £250 voluntary on top of compulsory?

Sounds like a real bargain!
