Britons are too ignorant about Europe to vote in a referendum on the subject, a top Brussels official claimed last night.

Viviane Reding, vice-president of the European Commission, said the British debate about Europe was so ‘distorted’ that people could not make an ‘informed decision’ about whether or not to stay in the EU.

Mrs Reding-who boasted that 70% of the UK’s laws are now made in Brussels-went on to say; ‘Do the people know what they are going to vote about?

‘Very often I see a completely distorted truth being presented and then how do you want people to take an informed decision? They simply cannot.’ However Europe Minister David Lidington criticised her comments, saying: ‘It is very dangerous to start making assumptions about what makes someone qualified to cast a vote.’

I wouldn't say it's that the British people are ignorant per se. I would argue that our mass media generally peddles so much nonsense it doesn't allow for the regular person to make an objective decision.

So, I guess he's kinda right.

It's all to do with continental drift, in a couple of million years, we will either be closer to North America or Europe, I vote North America as they have given us so much of their culture, we speak the same language, McDonalds, trash Tv, chat shows, etc.

It's simple maths: we pay a lot of money to the EU and get nothing in return.

All the scaremongering about being isolated if out of EU is just nonsense.

Are the italians going to refuse selling parma ham to us if we were not in EU?

Or maybe we wouldn't be able to buy a VW transit because the germans would refuse to ship it over here.

Nonsense.

We should save the billions we give away to EU every year and put it to good use at home.

How about a more generous duty free allowance when travelling to Europe? The European court of human rights? Just think what Scameron would get away with without that in the background? Personally I dont want to leave the EEC!

I do - bring it on in the European elections UKIP

You seem like a rational guy, is it a honestly held belief that UKIP has a clue what they are doing?

I found Farrange's admission that he didn't know what was in last year's manifesto as a deeply chilling indictment of just how inept he is.

The dutyfree allowance benefits normal people once a year when they go on holiday and bring back some spirits and a few cigarettes.

It also benefits the smugglers going to calais every week and coming back fully loaded avoiding uk duties.

European court of human rights?!?!

Because of it we have criminals living off taxpayers money and some of them are not even locked up!

I doubt that going out of eu would make uk go back to capital punishment and torture.

It's just a waste of our hard earned money.

That has noting to do with the European elections. The UK pays £53million pounds per day into Brussels, enough to dredge all the rivers and renew all our railways and give everyone a big tax cut as well.

Farage seems to be the only one who will commit to take us out of this disgusting union. We might or we might not get a referendum in 2017, (why wait so long), but a referendum with a massive vote of 'out' doesn't commit any government to take us out.

UKIP is run by a bunch of old national front heavies who think they are up standing members of society and politics.

They wouldn't be upstanding for very long if I met them.......

I don't have a view toward the EU as such, we'll be screwed over by the government one way of the other, doesn't matter, communism for the win :)

I seem to remember some very surprised MP's when the North east of England had a referendum as to should Newcastle rule the Northeast (put simply) and got a very loud NO in response.

I think they may get the same response to who do we want to rule us UK or Europe. I say neither it wont make a bit of difference to us they would all rip us off..

I would rather be in the EU than vote for UKIP, sorry but they came to power I would seriously leave this country ASAP. Please see below why:

Just because they oppose something that is unpopular, doesn't make them fit to run our country, and I'd rather they didn't

No let him vote UKIP if he wants. The reality is that UKIP won't get into power - their existence takes more votes from the Tories, creating more marginal seats, which labour could win.

Frankly, I think all the parties are a waste of space and our political system is a useless dinosaur, but anything has to be better than more right wing politics.

As to Europe, I'm pro. But I do think that the media is very anti, and it's more about politics and power than what's best and right, and this affects the views of the less well informed.

Please give me a good reason why being IN Europe benefits me as an individual ?

The way I see it at the moment, it only benefits those who are elected to the European Parliaments and top jobs !

Take Neil Kinnock for example.. was pretty useless as a Labour Leader - now both he and his Wife are Multi Millionaires having been given cushy jobs in Europe !!

People are ignorant . Ignorant of the dangers of UKIP. Sadly there are fewer and fewer who remember an odious little man with a tache who got the popular vote by promising to cure his country of the ills pushed onto it by their european neighbours.

That man was Hitler and look what happened.

Ukip are racist sexist homophobes with on policy that strikes a chord with the Daily fascist and its readers

You should say 'Daily nazist', not 'Daily fascist'.

Although the fascist leaders decided to form an alliance with the nazists, the two movements were very different and had very different policies.

So nazism and fascism, contrary to common belief, should not be confused.

I always smile when someone addresses a racist idea as fascist and not nazist.

You think it's a disgusting union? Why? I would prefer an answer which isn't straight out of the Daily Mail. You do realise that Europe is our biggest trading partner, and I would imagine the free movement of goods rules saves us far, far more than £53m a day.

There are, however, many rules that are pretty daft - but there are also hundreds that are incredibly useful - especially around Employment. As I've said earlier - our press cannot provide an objective and balanced insight for love 'nor money.

It's all about power. There can be no denying that Germany is the ruler of the union, they probably think this justified because they pay more in than any other country. We have no say whatsoever in what happens, it is heading towards communism.
