I've heard it suggested that this loophole is likely to be closed soon so get your appeal in.

It appears the numbers affected (those who should of been exempt for the bedroom tax) are showing as around 5000 or less by the BBC report (which is what the DWP put forward). Others are putting forward the number affected could be more like 40,000:-

What are the chances that the government will backdate legislation to stop this?

according to the circular published by DWP on Wednesday, they will be amending the legislation to cloe this loophole, however this will not be retrospective

 

so therefore pre 1996 claimants will be exempted from bedroom tax from 1 April 2013 until the rules get amended (which is expected to be some time between now and April 2014)
