I have an interview regarding a new JSA Claim, now am looking after my son which he is on ESA support group however he has never applied for DLA/PIP so not getting any carers allowance for him.

 

Question is would i be required to look for work and attend regular interviews as part of my JSA claim? Even so am looking after my son full time? I’m not sure how this works out.

You can restrict the hours available, and the type of work in order to look after your son - However, you would need to be available for some of the time in order to claim Job Seeker's Allowance. If your caring responsibilities are 24/7, then you'd be unable to claim JSA.

 

If you do claim JSA, then you must be able to demonstrate that you are actively seeking employment and can not turn down a reasonable offer of work - Reasonable in this context would be in line with any restrictions you have in your Job Seeker's Agreement and/or interferes with your caring responsibilities.

 

It may well be worth your while seeing if you can claim carer's allowance on behalf of your son - Whilst not as high as JSA, it may make all the difference to you.

You would be able to put some restrictions to your job searches, but the DWP would not accept you as a carer as such. In order for you to be accepted as a full time carer your son must demonstrate to the DWP that he has quite severe care needs by way of being awarded PIP (DLA if he is under 16).

 

 

From the JC's point of view here we a have someone that is said to need full time care but hasn't bothered to claim the correct benefits to prove it.
