In 2012 I left the uk and everything I had to look for a new life in Africa. While I was away my house was repossessed . Before I left I wrote to the council and told them I had handed back the keys to the mortgage company and couldn't pay the ouncil tax anymore. I am planning to return to the uk soon and am worried if I could be arrested at the airport if there is a warrant out for my arrest due to none payment of council tax arrears I might not be aware of.. Can anyone advice me please. Thanks

You can go to prison for non payment of council tax

but they is only for those who can pay not the poor

I doubt there will be any arrest

If you are coming back to the uk these debt will rear there head soon enough

Time to take them head on!

If i have helped in any way hit my star.

any advice given is based on experience and learnt from this site :-)

Simple answer is yes you can. Many local authorities pass their arrest warrants to the police. These get entered on the PNC. This can be checked by UKBA. I have heard of this once in the past few years.

Do you know if there is a way of checking if there is a warrant out for you arrest?

I wouldn't rely on the local magistrate court. Best bet would be to contact the council. In my experience they'd much rather have an arrangement to pay than a court appearance (where the court would likely accept your offer in any case). Your situation sounds dire enough to make an offer to pay over a long time acceptable. Any idea how much the debt is?

Sounds like you will have a mortgage short full if you handed the keys back

How much council tax arrears are there

You could start to repay it showing that you are willing to pay and not a won't pay

There is options available to you

Perhaps you should list the debt to get correct advice
