I have significant debt in UK and it has been 5 years since last default. My move to UK is unavoidable. I don't have any funds and will not be able to afford any repayments until i get a job. I would like to stay low when i move to avoid the hassle of debt collectors until i can afford repayments. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Difficult to avoid as so many things involve a credit check and/or data output to your credit record. e.g renting a house, Gas/Electric, mobile phone contracts, Car Insurance, UK bank accounts.

You would have to be living in a way that did not require things in your name.

As a minimum, you should check for any CCJ's using http://www.trustonline.org.uk/. There is a small cost for checking and using it would not alert any creditors. If there are CCJ's they have 6 years from the date of judgement to obtain enforcement and the CCJ will be on your record for 6 years. Having CCJ's on your record will affect you, if you want to rent a house in your name, for which a credit check is required.

If you want to check your credit record, you can apply in writing to Experian in writing from abroad, providing relevant evidence of your identity. There is a process for doing this. If you wait until you are in the UK to check your credit record, you will have to supply your latest UK address and I suspect that creditors would be in contact soon after.

We could do with some help from you.
