I would just shop around and use comparison sites to do quotes on a few different vehicles.

Try and stay away from boy racer style cars such as the corsa/saxo/clio as I think these might attract higher prices (although I am not certain).

A Corsa is not a 'boy racer style car' as standard. Fitting those useless parts from the small ads goes some way to converting them into one, plus they also invalidate the insurance if undisclosed.

Have you checked if your son would like a small capacity historic car (VW Beetle/Morris Minor) ?

tried comparison sites but so many cars that filling in same details over and over and over started melting my brain.

seemed best to ask here as I;m sure many have been here before me.

Any car in insurance group 1 - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups/?ig=1

Adding a parent as named driver will bring down the cost too.

didnt know the parkers guide still existed..... been many moons since I last bought a car or id proably have thought of it. thanks for the memory jog. ill go their when Ive washed the pots...

If you choose a corsa, be aware that the low insurance ones are the newer models and not the pre-2000 ones.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

The insurance for a old corsa b is high, whether this be due to the market it attracts or the lack of security I am not sure.

This.

Have you tried a Nissan Micra or VW Polo?

Tell me about it. Ive been stuck with one for the past few months since my 3 series engine decided it wanted to die.

There are a few companies that specialise in providing insurance for learner drivers and young people who have just passed their driving test. I have provided a link to one such company. To avoid any possible adverse comments; I have no interest (financial or otherwise) in the said company. I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

Be very wary of insure the box. You are only allowed to drive at certain times of the day, and only a certain mileage. They even restrict you to certain types of roads. That company is pretty much there to insure old drivers, or those that do a few miles per week only doing the shopping.

As mentioned, any cars in the lower insurance group

My first car was a nissan micra 1.3 and it cost me £700 and cost to insure £1500 and that wasn't that long ago

I put my dad down as an additional driver and that helped a bit and also if you drive might be worth asking your company about multiple car discounts, I always find direct line cheapest for me personally

Makes me feel really old, my renewal was £180. Still, I can see why insurance is dear for youngsters, I had a young lad of 18 in my shop who passed his test on Monday and promptly crashed his Saxo Tuesday evening. He came in again on Thursday and he`d crashed again!

Sorry renegadeimp but your information about insure the box is incorrect. There are NO time restrictions and drivers are allowed 6,000 miles on the policy although extra miles can be bought. They do not restrict driving to certain types of roads and in fact give bonus miles of up to 100 per month depending on how you drive. Information is collected by a telematics box installed in the car and can be accessed via your home computer at any time to see where you could improve your driving. You must be thinking of other insurers who use similar systems (maybe ikube). I can assure you that my daughter is not elderly and is really happy with her insurance.

There are restrictions. For instance, they dont allow you to drive in peak hours. If you do, then they invoke a penalty clause which can mean that You use extra miles to travel during that period. Been there, done it. Got the t-shirt, will NEVER insure with them again.

This is directly from insure the box's website

Incentives not penalties - With insurethebox there are no fines and no curfews, we take a positive approach to encourage our customers to drive more responsibly and safely. Safe driving can earn you Bonus Miles and save you money on your renewal price, not to mention reducing road accidents and even saving lives.

Perhaps things have changed since you insured with them. However you are entitled to think what you want and I am certainly not in the slightest interested who the OP finally chooses to insure with.

I am insured with insure the box and there are no restrictions on where/when you can drive whatsoever, the only issue with driving at "peak times" for accidents is that you will potentially earn less bonus miles that month.

These are "bonus's" anyway and so I just see it as, anything over the 6000 I've paid for is welcome, whether it's 20 a month, or the full 100.

I've been with them 3 years and have never had an issue. There's always the risk of next years insurance being slightly higher, but if your a sensible driver, then driving at "peak times" for accidents occasionally will not have a significant impact on your premiums. And there's always the option of shopping around again at the end of the year.

The main thing for me when I was 19, I couldn't afford another company, and you'll be safe in the knowledge that premiums wouldn't go up without notification at renewal anyway, whatever you're quoted for the year, is what you'll pay, they don't review at random intervals through the year.

It's always useful to have a tracker box too, as if your cars stolen, you'll know exactly where it is!
