Lately I have been charged £35 as a "card misuse fee". It seems to be applied when I have bought something with my maestro card.

I have written to Natwest to ask for an explanation as to why I am being charged this "fee". As far as I can understand, this fee is clearly illegal as it's a penalty not an admin fee.

Has anyone else got an explanation as to why this fee is applied?

(I bet it's automated...)

Well the thing is I did have enough money in my account when I made the purchase. However, it was only deducted the day after - which was the day they slapped on various fees. So, as the fees went out and I didn't have enough money in my account that next day they also charged me the card misuse fee. At least that is my interpretation of events, awaiting further clarification from my branch.

As you say it seems like a clear penalty fee though so I think I have a "court winner" here :)
