Hi,

I used to have a HSBC account when I was much younger and there were loads of charges on - now the account was used between 97 - > 99. Can I claim these back? How easy will it be to do?

Will their records go back this far if I send in the SAR?

Many thanks

How do I get my account number and sort code? I tried calling main number but they won't tell me - do I have to go to branch?

Has anyone successfully claimed back charges over 6 years?

Right I've been into the bank and got my account number and sort code - lady in there was going to print me my statements but she reckons they aren't on there because it's too old. Do HSBC archive them somehere? If I send a SAR to head office will they be able to produce the records for me?

If not can I try and claim the charges back without statements - there was atleast 50per month for about 2 or 3 years, so it's worth my time.

hi jkop, don't know if it helps but I can tell you the HSBC charges I had -

between July 1998 and April 1999 it was £25 every month for exceeding my overdraft limit. The description on the statement was "excess overdraft fee".

In May 1999 the description changed to "total charges" and it was still £25.00.

Then in June 1999 the "total charges" went up to £27.50 per month and stayed at that rate until September 2002.

thanks - that does help actually - I thought it was £25 a pop - what about bounced chques / dd payment returns - where they also £25.

I guess I'l have to estimate - I reckon £75 per month at least. Is there any point sending in the SAR as I know they will say they have no records? or just do an estimate and send pre-lim letter? (i've been into branch and they told me they don't have records on my account any more)

Hi, the recall charges I had in 1999-2000 were £10.00 some days, and £28.00 other days. Card misuse was usually £28.00 sometimes £10.00. Unpaid item was also £28.00.

in all honesty - do you think I'm going to get anywhere? If I was fighting one of the parts (i.e either over 6 years or without statements I might be ok) but I'm thinking estimating AND over 6 years isn't going to get far?

this was for around 97 - 99

Hi Jkop,

I've just started my case against HSBC today. I will almost certainly be persuing them for charges from around late 98 / early 99. I have only just sent my SAR to them so will have to wait for a reply. Unfortunately I don't have access to the online account any more as it was closed in 2004.

I've also requested copies of my loan agreements I had with them as I no longer have this info (moved house, lost papers, moved house again so now there's no chance of me finding them!) I've read with great interest other posts regarding people who's bank cannot prove the agreement exists, although this isn't my main intention, I'll give it some serious thought should this situation develop.

Good luck with your claim - remember in the early stages you have nothing to lose, it's gotta be worth a shot!
