Ryanair Failed To Comply With Eu Law - Yahoo! News UK

Budget airline Ryanair has been forced to change its terms and conditions following complaints it was denying passengers their legal rights. The firm has changed its rules - but only after being threatened with legal action. Under EU law, airlines that cancel flights should offer passengers a refund and a free flight home, as well as meals and hotel accommodation.

But a series of customer complaints prompted the Office of Fair Trading to look at Ryanair's terms and conditions in detail.

It decided the airline's policy on delayed or cancelled flights failed to comply with European regulations and was "unfair".

Sky Reporter Joel Hills said the OFT also had concerns about the airline's baggage policies.

He said: "Ryanair is not obliged to carry oversized items like skis, snowboards, surfboards - it chooses to and charges you for the privilege. Nothing wrong with that.

"But what Ryanair used to do was, at check-in, it would get passengers to sign a form effectively absolving the company of any responsibility for loss or damage."

The airline's lost baggage policy, which allowed it to deny liability if passengers failed to submit two claims in 21 days, was also deemed unfair.

In a statement, Ryanair said: "The Office of Fair Trading has been in contact with a number of airlines, including Ryanair to suggest additions/modifications to the terms and condition of travel and Ryanair has been working with the OFT to implement these suggested additions/modifications."
