Dear All,

Possibly asked and answered before. If it has, my apologies.

Why the HUGE amount of real estate taken up by banner advertising at the top of every single page?

There is the main CAG banner, then an ad banner (currently for the Seat Leon), then a PPI banner ad and then a banner with some quick links to CAG posts on the left hand side.

Each page I visit requires that I scroll down one full screen-full in order to see any posts.

WHY? I know that the site costs noting for me to join and that it needs paying for somehow but this seems both overly excessive and annoying to my way of thinking.

Is there any way to get rid of them?

Cheers,

Art [/endrant]

When i am logged in i also get adverts. Not as many as there used to be. Currently looking at an advert for debt help through ad choices. It is ironic that this happens on cag. Just switched browsers and the same.

Any opinion I give is from personal experience .

prob google or yahoo spiders and cookies

if you have an id with either of them.

by default you sign up to share your browsing habit with everyone and any pers details they have on you

so your browser gets hijacked.

forget not sky/virginmedia etc

are all linked into them.

Here's a screen shot of what I'm getting. Doesn't matter which browser (currently using FF for this post).

I get it when I'm using my usual browser too (that's Opera).

Top banner seems to be Google related - I've just searched for and bought 2 jumpers from M&S with 40% off:

CAGAds.jpg

and that's a screenful!

That'd the sort of thing i get. I have not tried in private browsing. I get lots with Facebook but i accept that but can't think of any other sites i do. It is unfortunate that the ones i see are for debt management companies or ppi reclaim.

Any opinion I give is from personal experience .

It's nothing to do with browser settings, virus etc - it's simply a case that site team don't see these ads at the top of the page, but regular users do. I'm pretty sure these top ads were only showing to non-logged in users at some point. Someone must have changed something.

I agree that they take up a lot of screen space, and I'm always concious of trying to keep the main page content above the fold, but we also found that the top of the page was the best position for adverts by a long way. Still, it might be time to have a re-arrange of things - I'll bring it up.
