Based on a real life auction.

It's called 'shilling' and it's frowned upon. If the other person thinks something is going (and a veteran auction person would have done their homework) they will either not bid or they will bid you up and pull out leaving your mate with the bill. It's dog eat dog in an auction house and some people play very dirty.

Is it legal to take a mate along with you and get him to bid against some one who is buying your property at auction ? Just a question ? Also if this happens on a regular basis ?

This has been done in auction houses for as long as I can remember and I am knocking on the bus pass door, motor auctions are famous for this type of bidding. But remember you must be very careful as it is not uncommon to get caught out by placing the last bid. This can be an expensive mistake depending on the tems and conditions applied at the auction house.
