So, how are people on benefits meant to pay their council tax? You can't really pay that out of your £71 a week benefits. especially if you have to pay some rent too.

That is the whole idea of the changes. The only way the government can keep the claimant number down is by making it much more difficult for people. I think I read somewhere all benefit claimants will start paying a minimum of 9% of council tax that is due from April 2013. This was a proposal, but it is down to individual councils to decide how much help they offer.

In the US there are actual groups of people who control certain neighbourhood places for rough sleeping. For example in LasVegas, there are huge drains, where thousands of people are living with all of their worldly belongings and they have formed resident association type control over these. When there is occasional heavy rains, they have to help each other out, by removing all of their belongings. Many of these people sleeping rough have jobs in the hotels in the resort.

 

Think this is what IDS dreams of. People living in tents around our towns/cities, but going off to work in the mornings, so they can afford to eat.

I could understand this push to get people off of benefits if there were 3 million jobs that weren't being filled, but there aren't the jobs. And even some of those with jobs are on really low incomes. It's a poverty trap that cannot currently be escaped for a lot of people.

Exactly estellyn, the government are losing more jobs than they are creating so where the hell are they getting off by penalising those who cannot find a job and those who are unfit to take one. There isn't the jobs there anyway.

Which sadly and unbelievably seems to be what the coalition government want, driving people into destitution and suicide.

I said it before and will say it again, they dont care if anyone finds a job. The real plan is to deamonise welfare and simply get people of it, then the average person will think better to take a £2 an hour job than use the safety net whilst those who cant work for any reason will be forced to turn to family for help or be on the streets. If the government stay in for another term I prect in the 2nd term they will remove the min wage, then the corps will start a recovery with the witheld profits and they can all claim the min wage and welfare was holding the economy back. In the meantime the min wage is been bypassed with the illegal WP.

I think a lot of normally law abiding citizens are going to find themselves behind bars in the coming years ahead, inability to pay what will ultimately be 18.5% (or possibly even more in coming years) of the council tax bill will see many in trouble initially with bailiffs, after which the next step is a committal hearing which can mean prison.

 

Magistrates are supposed only to commit to prison those that willfully refuse to pay, but I wonder if this will change in light of the sheer numbers of people who won't be able to meet the obligation.

it will be a lot more than 18.5% for many as pensions are protected.

 

eg. this current 10% cuts mine is going up to about 30%. I will probably be paying over 50% on the 2nd cut.

How this idiotic Government thinks someone claiming JSA and ESA can afford to pay towards the extra Bedroom and CT costs is beyond me? people on low benefits are already struggling but nothing is being done about it and April will soon be here ? Many are finding 1 bedroom properties difficult to find to down size so these people end up paying the heavy cost of having an extra bedroom it's just ridiculous .

They've also capped the benefit increase to 1%. Just what on earth are we meant to live on? Not everyone is lucky enough to have family who support them.

Plus the council tax support changes will mean further job loses as there is less money in the local economy as people who normally would have spent a few quid in their local shop now don't have that money spare. same with 'bedroom tax' etc

Up until three years a go I had a three bedroom house with the same social landlord I have now, I gave the house up for a one bedroom flat as it was obviously too big for me, the funny thing is I would have to give it up now under the new regs, but whats even funnier is my landlords promptly spent a nice few quid on the house upgrading windows and the like soon after I vacated, and then sold it.

So much for releasing housing back into the rental stock.
