Can you recommend any sofa retailers?

Hi guys,

 

First of all, Happy New Year!

 

I am looking at buying some sofas for my living room. I was looking at DFS sales, but then I couldn't help, but notice the horror stories of how many problems people were having with DFS's customer services and their 10 year warranty. I'm worried and need some recommendations of a whom i should buy from as i don't want a rubbish warranty that is useless when i need it.

 

Can anyone please help or advice?

Hello there.

 

We're not here to recommend companies, but I think you've done the right thing to research on the interweb.

 

If I'm looking at dealing with a new company, I google the company name and the word 'problem' or similar, and see what comes up. Using the Search facility on CAG also works, as you may know.

You can go pretty well anywhere, things can go wrong from time to time so you take a chance!

 

DFS well so many complaints on the net, so that may tell you to be wary, like has been said use the net to try and see what people have to say.

Your right mike, but the problem i have is that it seems almost ALL sofa retailers such as DFS, SCS, HARVEYS have got loads and loads of complaints.

 

The question i want to know is if there was an issue with the quality of their sofas (assuming its deliberate damage) and a company such as DFS deny to repair/replace, then what are the chances of us successfully get them to repair/replace?

Try someone like John Lewis, more than likely cost you more but I'm sure you'll get better customer care ect.( not that I've ever bought a sofa from them).

Thanks maroon. JL are known for the good customer service, but unfortunately, they don't have any sofas that i like.

all I can say is:- I bought a 3 seater sofa from Harveys, but I wish I had thought about it i..e. 3 seater settee, but only two cushions, lie down on it and hey presto no support in the middle where your buttocks are hence aching body after a while. The other noted thing is that material are stapled to the frame (okay) but slight misuse and rip can take place.

Debenhams years ago I bought many a 3 seater from luckily had no problem with the 3 seater. as people say you pay more for but I got 30% off in those days.

I had one from DFS and it was 'mince' made from cardboard by the looks of it.

 

Did get a good suite from Reid's not sure if they're still about ?

Lasting okay but kids gone now so very little use these days and is okay thank goodness even after all the grandsons jumping around on it.

The problem with this sofa though is that the leather is soft and i got a feeling that either it will go even more soft in a few months/years or it will tear easily.

Sorry if I've lost the plot, do you mean if you're looking online or seeing it in a shop please? I thought websites showed a description normally, but I could be wrong.

1.

 

Ask the salesperson where the leather came from originally, since you can tell a lot about leather quality by the country of origin. Leather Secrets notes that European leather is consistently found to give the highest quality and North American leather provides a consistently good quality and a fair price point. South and Central American leather is mediocre. Asian leather typically is not good quality leather.

 

2.

 

Smell the leather furniture. Good leather retains a leathery animal smell. If you get no odor or a rancid odor from the leather furniture, don't buy it. Avoid leather with a chemical smell; poor quality leather emits a formaldehyde smell.

 

3.

 

Run a hand over the leather. It should feel supple and have a texture to it. Leather furniture should move a little; avoid anything that feels excessively stiff. As Legacy Leather notes, all good quality leather furniture should display "fat wrinkles."

 

4.

 

Ask whether the leather is "top grain" or "full grain." Counter-intuitively, "top grain" leather is bargain leather and not good quality. "Full grain" leather denotes good quality. "Full top grain" also denotes good quality. Leather Legacy warns that manufacturers simply call the leather "top grain" when they have sanded away the real top layer and stamped a veneer on top.

Remember that leather can be made from different types of mammals, birds and even fish. Not all types of leather will have the same feel, smell or aesthetic but the same general principles apply to determining the item's quality.

I've been down to a shop, but the sales people try to confuse you with their jargon, so you think ur getting a quality sofa. How can i tell if a sofa has a good quality material and built to last?
