Can you rely on mpg claims?

Which Magazine is talking bunk, those figures aren't claimed for the owner to try and match, they are given so the prospective purchaser can make an informed choice on which car gives more or less miles per gallon.

 

The tests are all carried out on a dynamometer under ministry control and not on the roads so all cars are tested in exactly the same manner. That means that all cars will give an mpg figure that is consistent and not dependent on the testing driver or road conditions.
