Hi

I have just received a bill from E.On for just around £3000 because THEY have been reading my meter wrong, + we have supplied several reading both bu email and leavin the card out.

Do I have any obligation to pay this? As I said it has been their error in reading it wrong for goodnes knows how long.

Thanks

Hi Bigglesw,

I want to try and help because I know this is not a nice situation to be in.

We need to establish why the meter has been read incorrectly, have we got the day and night rates mixed up? Or did we have the incorrect number of dials registered?

What will happen regarding the amount you will have to pay, depends on the specific circumstances of what has gone wrong, for example have we sent bills and did you question the error on the bill, have we tried to read the meter etc.

You need to discuss what went wrong with us and how to come to a resolution.

Have we now corrected the account?

We should also be offering a payment arrangement for a longer than normal amount of time to pay off any balance.

I hope you get this sorted.

Helena

Hello Helena

I was hoping for I dependant advice. However it is good to know that companies also look to help clients on the forum.

In Brief. It seems that you have been reading the meter wit the wrong amount of dials on both the day and night units. I believe a mix up between 5 and 6 dials.

I have had some good will gestures offered from E.On on this but the I simply can't afford that sort of lump sum to clear it, and although I have been offered extended terms I really don't want a debt hanging over me for the next 4 years either. Also the correct amount of payment on the DD together with the extended payments to repay the debt come to over £300 p/m and this is something I simply never budgeted for.

I understand, thank you for coming back to me.

These issues normally go to specialists to look at and deal with as there are quite a few specifics that need to be taken in to account.

Have you raised a complaint? If you are unhappy with what has been offered I would advise you to continue with the complaints process and escalate the issue further.

You can find the complaints procedure on your bills and the website.

I do hope you can get this sorted and come a resolution.

Don't forget they can not back bill you for more than a year if it was not your mistake.

I had the same problem with Eon they did not believe me when I informed them the readings

were the wrong way around.

I was charge an extortionate amount but I did not realize they could only go back a certain amount of time.

Do not accept the first offer, and close the complaint,

If necessary take it all the way to the ombudsman. if you are not happy.

I have made E.On and offer to clear the debt in one lump su, and this is really all I can afford. I don't want a 4 year debt hanging over me certainly for something that is NOT my fault.

Should I withdarw this offer or leave it on the table? I really don't know what to do for the best.

Hi

You need to make a Formal Complaint to Eon about this make the firm point that this error was caused due to the Meter Operator employed by Eon to read the meters taking the incorrect readings and passing those incorrect readings to Eon.

As the Meter Operator was employed by Eon to carry out this task and giving incorrect/false reading to Eon both Eon and the Meter Operator are liable for this error.

Due to this you require the full details of the Meter Operator company employed by Eon to carry out this work

I have supplied as many if not more meter readings than the contracted meter reader. In all cases either by email or on the card left out I have always filled in the correct amount so I always got an accurate bill.

Should I withdraw the offer I have put on the table? Has anyone had sucess in getting a power company to write off this type of error?
