Fantasy/sci fi book recommendations please

Hi Everyone, I wonder if anyone can help. (plus hope it's ok to post this here)

 

I've got in a rut, rereading my favourite books and really need some new recommendations. I've read and liked:

 

Robin Hobb

Ian M banks

Guy G Kay

Peter V Brett

Raymond Feist

Tad Williams

Robert Jordan (though gave up when one book seemed to cover a few days)

George RR Martin

Peter F Hamilton

Trudi Canavan

Tolkien (of course)

Earlier David Eddings (later, for me = bad)

Didn't get on with Steven Erikson's stuff, or Joe Abercrombie

 

Probably others I've forgotten. I read other genres, but love series of books that I can get into. I'm laid up a lot of the time so my kindle has become my very good friend.

 

I'm grateful for any fantasy/sci fi reccomendations. If you have anything else you want to recommend, that's great too - as an example of what else I liked, I loved Time Travellers Wife, and hated anything by Kate Mosse. My guilty pleasure reading is Jodi Piccoult.

Try Ann McCaffrey Dragon series, the are so well written that you think they are real and if you bumped into one you wouldnt be surprised, fantasy/bit sexy at time any of the Jon Norman books about Gor, heavier reading and not sci fi but similar are the Jean m Auel books, they are set in prehistoric times and are brill I think the first one is Clan of the cave Bear.

Dont think you can bet a good jilly cooper though !!

Thanks . I've read Anne MacCaffrey when I was much younger, and did enjoy the dragon books. I'll have a look at the other suggestions. I've not read any Jilly Cooper, I'll give her books a look too.

i would recommend steering clear of the acorna series tho, it had a very dark theme and was not one i enjoyed

Thanks, I did look at the acorna series a few months ago on amazon (I didn't read it when I was younger), but it seemed to have very mixed reviews, so I gave it a miss glad I did if you think it's not worth the effort.

Hi locutus, yes I've read the dune series and the discworld series - which had me giggling out loud on trains and buses in my teen years and early 20's, just like the Douglas Adams hitchhiker series did (well that had me laughing so much I'd be struggling to breathe, with other passengers wondering if they should get me medical assistance ).

hmm try Lois McMaster Bujold

 

ive only read the one (diplomatic imunity) picked it up in america as it had a recommendation from anne mccaffery on the cover... cant really remember it now its been at least 6 years since i read it, its either somewhere in the 300 odd books upstairs, somewhere in the 150 or so books i put for car boot or randomly dotted around the house ill have to dig it out again

 

anne mccaffery wise try one called nimishas ship, its a standalone book and as such feels like its been a little shortened in places to fit in one book but is excellent, shame annes died now and theres never likely to be a sequal

 

 

 

oh and...

 

can anyone recommend a good medieval murder author thats actually avaliable in ebook?

which dont seem to have much

 

sorry been inspired that ive now put all the ebooks on download for, pratchett, herbert, caffery, rr martin, tolkien, eddings, McMaster Bujold

 

now i just need to fix my tablet (again) so i can read them all

Thanks, I decided to try a book of early short stories 'Proto Zoa' by Bujold, so I'll get round to that soon.

 

I don't have any mdieval murder recommendations, but if you like stuff set in a medieval type time frame, have you read 'Tigana' by Guy Gavriel Kay - I can't recommend it highly enough.

Try some stuff by Issac Asimov. Very ahead for his time in fact Star trek used his idea for the Positronic brain for Commander Data.

 

In his book Foundation he writes about the characters using a device which is clearly an ipad or similar, all this written in the 50's.

If you liked that, you might also like 'The Lions of Alrassan' and 'Sailing to sarantium/lord of emperors(duology)' by the same author. He also did a high fantasy tolkienesque series - the first book is called 'the summer tree'

thanks, I just went and looked at simak on amazon, didn't really appeal, but down the page there was recommeded some books by Johnathan davision (who I've never heard of), so at less than £2 for the frst book, thought I'd give it a try.
