Ok here's my opinion on Dell. Yes the desktops at least seem very reliable, i have no experience of laptops. What i will say though is they have limited options to upgrade or add anything & have some quirks which i've found frustrating when i've wanted to do maintenance like cleaning inside also the one i have is LOUD, but its about 6yrs old. I've added RAM & upgraded (with difficulty) the video card, but as far as reliability is concerned have been very impressed. Hope that was of some help? ps they are a bit pricey IMO for what you get.

Have to agree with the last couple of posts, they are of very inferior quality and grossly overprices.

If you want opinions, rather than going into what makes you're looking for, ask us what desktop / laptop within a certain price range. Gives us more to offer in return :)

If it's a desktop you're thinking of, personally I build my own, but I've heard good reports about http://www.palicomp.co.uk

A friend used them and they offered really good service. The speakers in the package he ordered were out of stock, they phoned him, apologised, offered either a reduction in price or some more expensive speakers for the same price. Most would just wait for stock :p

My experience with Dell has not been positive I'll admit. My hubby and I bought about 6 years ago now a very expensive (£3000) gaming laptop from Alienware, a company that specialises in high end hardware, that was bought by Dell. We took out an extended warranty (3 years) just to be safe (yes I now know this wasnt worth the paper it was written on).

All was well until approx one and a half year later when the thing wouldn't boot. With my husband and I being computer savvy we instantly diagnosed the fault through its 'bios beep code'- (an audible code that plays on attempting to boot a faulty pc)- the RAM was gone. So calling Alienware I (eventually) got through to a very foreign gentleman in god knows where. I said 'the bios beep code is bla bla bla which means RAM broken!'

He then spent 45 minutes telling me to take the laptop apart piece by piece until he decided from his script 'Its the RAM!'

-.-

Unfortunately Dell were already the new owners of alienware. If we'd realised that maybe we would have been braced for what was to come.

Within 8 months the same problem arose. Again we called Alienware/Dell, again told them the problem (and that it was the second time it had happened), and again, 45 minutes later...'it's the RAM!'

So off it goes and a month later back it comes and alls well(!)

3/4 months later- same thing...

When it went again 4 months after that time, outside the warranty, we decided enough was enough & didn't bother.

So I'd steer clear of Dell- while the laptop was originally Alienware, it was Dells replacement hardware that failed 3 times, Dell that broke one of the lid locks, Dell that sent it back with a different lid case (original was airbrushed, replacement wasnt) and Dell that god knows how much of my time on the phone to them, queuing & diagnosing my own pc!

I'll admit, I'm biased, I had a bad experience, but it's my personal experience, and that's all I'll give-no rumours, no lies :)

-D

going of Dell for a sec, years ago when I was first looking for a comp, I remember a guy in one shop telling me, whatever you do, under no circumstances get AOL, unless you want a usels comp then stay clear, he then proceeded to inform he he actually worked for AOL and would never recomend them! heard since if you do decide to have AOL then expect a lifetime of trouble!

AOL is now TalkTalk... ISPs are a different thread altogether. Customer Service is non existent in the UK at the moment, very few companies are proactive at sorting problems out. I think Plus Net are the only ISP with a rep that has shown an interest in helping it's members on CAG.

There is an outlet that use ebay (saveonlaptops) they are called. We got a great deal on a Toshiba.

4GB Ram

500GB Hard Drive

I'll try and dig out the other specs soon.

Free laptop case and Bulldog Security (although I prefer different security which is free anyway)

All in £248.00 (free P&P)

They have deals like that all the time, for good makes Samsubg etc......

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)
