Hi,

Like others on here, i got into a situation with Wonga where i was in a never ending borrowing cycle, having to borrow more and more each month as i would pay back the loan then have to borrow more to live on. My initial loan was £100, i kept borrowing and its upto £466 now, i thought i need to get out of this cycle. Reading this forum encouraged me to do something about it. My due date was the 26th, i called my bank Halifax on the 25th and they put a block on Wonga taking money from my bank account. Then on the 26th before 5pm i wrote to wonga the below:

Dear Wonga,

Further to my previous email dated 26/10/12

Loan Agreement Ref : xxxxxxxxxxxx

I am not in a position to make a lump sum payment to pay off my wonga debt. This is not a decision that i have taken lightly and realise my obligation to pay back this sum of money. However it would be reckless of me to continue in a cycle of paying back a loan then having to take another loan out to cover the cost of paying the loan back.

The interest makes it impossible for me to borrow lower amounts each month and pay it back that way, instead i would have to borrow more and more each month just to cover my living expenses. If allowed to continue i would eventually reach a stage where i simply had borrowed more then i earn and the debt would of spiraled out of control.

I am currently in a debt management plan with Payplan, however rather than handing the wonga debt to them i would prefer to come to an arrangement with you to pay it back alot quicker than i would be able to if i handed it to Payplan.

Therefore i kindly request that a replayment plan be set up so i can repay this debt to Wonga. Im willing to pay back the original loan plus one months interest and the late fee.

The total of my debt would be £466.44 + £20 late fee.

I prepose the following repayment schedule

Nov 1st £10

Dec 1st £50

Jan 1st £50

Feb 1st £50

March 1st £100

April 1st £100

May 1st £100

June 1st £26.44

Please freeze the interest on this loan so the payments i make to you go towards paying off what i owe.

Of course should my circumstances change and im able to pay larger amounts or pay the loan off early, i will do so. Please send me your bank details so i can begin to make payments to you. Payment will be made by standing order from my bank as the bank have taken my debit card.

Please note i will commuicate about this debt in writing only.

I guess im looking for reasurrance that im going about things the right way and to perhaps get a little help along the way also. How long do wonga take to reply normally? i sent the email to [email protected]. Should i go ahead and start the payments if i dont hear from them? are the wonga bank account details correct in the sticky?

I also shifted my money to my savings account at Halifax (was devoid of money btw) is that protecting it?

Heard from wonga today, not answer to my email, but a generic email saying to go to their website and set up a payment plan. But the website plan only lets you set up 3 installments, plus i don't want them having any of my card details again and such like..

So i sent them another email basically a copy of the first one with the suggested payment plan on. Hopefully i will hear something.

Can anyone tell me how long they usually take to respond?

Good email. Just be careful with excluding any debts from your dmp. I don't understand why you haven't just added the Wonga debt onto your debt management plan? If you're with payplan you will have provided them with income and expenditure details and have a set amount that you pay them each month?

Are you going to be able to maintain these additional payments outside of your dmp? If payplan learn that you've got debt outside of your plan and that you're favouring one creditor over another, they may kick you off the plan.

It's fantastic that you're taking positive steps to get out of the endless payday loan cycle. There's a sea of advice on these forums that will be of great help to you.

It never rains but it pours...

thank you for the reply, yes i had thought about adding it to my payplan. But i guess i thought about getting this cleared as soon as possible. Maybe i have made a mistake there. I thought that if i told payplan they may kick me off the plan for getting another debt

Still not heard back from Wonga for the email i sent on the 26th oct. Do they usually take this long to reply? Should i proceed and make the first payment even if i have not heard from them ? I thought i should make the first payment and send an email indicating that. I guess i can use the payment details for them off the sticky and perhaps send an email to all the wonga addresses listed on this site?

Thanks for help

Hi sharpend,

Wonga usually takes anything from one day up to a week to respond, and sometimes they do not respond, so carry on doing the payments until a plan is agreed and send them an email every 3-4 days. They will respond at some point, probably asking to complete their I&E form.

You can also try (if not done already) to send your email to the address [email protected]. This is the department dealing with repayment plans.

Hi sharpend,

No worries, they have two bank accounts (old and new), one with HSBC and one with Barclays. Both accounts are still active.

I would definitely send them an email again requesting a repayment plan.

Sharpend, have you actually had confirmation from them that your repayment plan has been agreed, Im worried for you incase theyre quite happily taking your money but STILL APPLYING INTEREST...get the buggers to confirm that all interest is frozen....have you checked your account online

Hi,

Thanks for the above, i just checked my account as you suggested, it shows the payment plan set up on there and also stats on the account that the interest has been frozen.

Just one thing, they have stuck an extra £10 on the amount i owe. Should be 489 which includes 1 months interest + £20 default fee. They are showing i owe £499 and some odd pence. But i guess i wont argue over that.

Thanks for the advice

Peter

Thays great news , gald your repayment plan has been set up, i will be defaulting on the 28th of this month and will follow your lead in terms of what you did, iam hoping the buggers will accept my ten month payment plan of £140 per month over ten months to clear what will be a £1400 debt by the time of defaulting, was there any particular wonga email address where you seemed to get most joy, Peter ?

Ive had no problems with Wonga...They were a bit slow to respond just lately but have sorted a repayment plan. Ive now emailed for a settlement figure as i only owe 152 but they told me to call them. I wont do that and wont answer the phone to them as i have no proof of anything so ive told them i will only deal with them via post or email. Theyre the easiest ive ever dealt with xx

So i make my first payment to Wonga on the 29th October, it was due on 1st November, they then write the below email.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for letting us know that you'll be making payments to your Wonga repayment plan via Standing Order.

This is fine, but please bear in mind that it can take 3-5 working days for a Standing Order to arrive at our bank, so please do allow for this delay when setting it up. For example, if your payment to us is due on the 25th of each month, you would be safest to set up the standing order for the 20th of the month, if your funds allow. If you have any concerns, please ask your bank for advice when setting up the Standing Order.

Or if this sounds too uncertain, you are more than welcome to ask us to take automatic payments from your debit card, or even make manual payments yourself, early on the morning of each payment date.

You can make payments anytime at the Wonga site, by logging in at https://www.wonga.com/Login.aspx, or by contacting our friendly collections team on 0844 842 9109 between 9am - 10pm, Monday - Friday.

We look forward to receiving your next payment and thanks again for working with us to resolve this situation.

Kind regards,

Collections Department

Wonga.com

Followed by this one:

ear Peter,

We really would like to reinstate your previous repayment plan and freeze any further interest once again.

In order to get you back on track we simply need to receive the missing payment of £10.00.

You can pay this at anytime by logging into your account here - https://www.wonga.com/Login.aspx. You can also update your card details if need be, or add an alternative card. Don't worry if you've forgotten your password, you can request a reset at the login page.

We will then reinstate the original agreement and freeze any further interest once again. Alternatively, you can give our friendly collections team a call between 9am - 10pm, Monday - Friday on 0844 842 9109, who will be happy to discuss the situation.

We really hope we can get the plan working again soon.

Kind regards,

Collections Department

So it would seem when you actually give them a repayment date, you have to pay 5 days before the due date so your money gets there on the agreed payment date, bit backward if you ask me. Also they have stuck more charges on my account in the form of interest and a £360 loan (£466 due on the repayment date) is not a £522 loan.

Where do i stand about paying this extra interest they are adding? I responded with the below email

Dear Sirs,

With regards to the below email.

I made the first payment towards the plan on the 29th of October. The £10 was paid to the account below with the Loan Agreement Ref : 0000xxxxxxxx‏

31 Oct 12 WONGA 60000000005xxxx2xx 31OCT12 22:22 FPO 10.00

Bank: HSBC Bank

Account No: 21544926

Sort Code: 40-06-09

Further payments will be made to your Barclays account, as detailed in a previous email. I note to make payments earlier so that they reach the account on the date stated for repayment. (Although this somewhat defeats the object of giving you a payment date.) Therefore to ensure further payments reach you on time, it may be prudent to move the payment date to the 3rd of the month rather than the 1st. This will give me a full 5 days from receiving my wages and paying you, for it to reach your account.

I will repay the original loan amount + the 1 months interest + the £20 late fee.

Total amount owed on promise date £466.44

This comprises of:

Capital repayment £360.00 Interest repayment£100.94 Transmission Fee£5.50

Owed now £466.44 + £20 late fee = £486.44

I will not recognise any further charges you choose to apply to this account.

Regards

Peter

Correct me if I am wrong but didnt you make our first payment of £10, Not by standing order but by direct credit ie paying it into their Barclays account in branch ?..Looks like Iam going to have to play canny here and set up a payment date of about the 4th and pay direct in around the 28th of every month (my payday) Thats if they accept of course. To me the above email stinks of them wanting to get their sticky fingers on your new debit card details

Yeah thats what i thought, they answered my reply emaiil, saying thank you for the £10 payment and that they were glad i was keeping to the repayment plan???????????????????? GO FIGURE!!

But yeah think you are right, they will constantly try and get debit card details for sure. Just have to stand firm. This forum sure does give you the information to stand up for your rights thats for sure.

  • 2 months later...

Thats up to wonga. Normally they will just add late payment markers, but it is at their discretion to put a default. However, technically they must send you a default notice with information on what you need to do to rectify the debt to avoid a default being registered.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

If my advice helps you, click the star icon at the bottom of my post and feel free to say thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

I hate Wonga and myself for being so thick as to take out a PDL (no offence intended towards anyone here I promise), but needs must at the time and never thought for a moment I would get caught up in that never ending cycle of borrowing. I am now at the point where my whole monthly income is owed this month!! I have been to the bank today to cancel the CPA (not much joy with that really; bank said they would write to Wonga on my behalf). I have emailed Wonga this evening with a proposed payment plan. What do you thin my chances are and how do I stop them accessing my account for full payment as usual this month? Thanks in advance for all advice x
