Back in the good old days (1970 to 1975) I was offered a job down south (I live on TEESSIDE) The job offer was for a better wage than I could get at home but due to housing costs I had to refuse the job. The employer came back to say they would supplement my housing cost by £45 a week (remember this is 1970's and my wage was £48 a week. I wonder with the cuts that are coming in now how long it will be before an employer that want people to work in areas with more expensive housing will have to up wages or supplement rent for their employees as they had to in the 70's when there were plenty of jobs to go round.

Ahhhhhh the 70s, I remember them well. Pre Thatcher, people used to care about their neighbours, greed was still bad, workers were well treated and the gap between the rich and poor was decreasing. Petrol was less than a pound a gallon and benefits (if you needed them) where enough to live on. great social change (for the good) race relations act, equal pay act. Jobs used to pay a living wage even though there was no minimum wage (due to decent welfare system and high levels of employment). I guess there where problems, i know platforms (shoes) were dangerous for a start :)
