Transport Officials Suspended Over West Coast Rail 'Fiasco'

Three Department for Transport officials involved in the now-scrapped West Coast rail franchise competition have been suspended, the department said today.

The competition to run trains on the West Coast Main Line was cancelled following the discovery of "significant technical flaws" in the way the franchise process was conducted, at a cost of £40m.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning it was revealed that the DfT will no longer be awarding a franchise contract to run the West Coast service to FirstGroup when the current franchise expires in December.

It is hard to believe that they could make such a fundamental accounting error ??

Although didnt one of the Olympic Ministers forget to add something like 8 million in VAT to the final bill !!

Yes, it was Tessa Jowell !!

Later he insisted that Culture Minister Tessa Jowell and London Mayor Ken Livingstone ignored warnings that the project budget was spiraling out of control, refused to accept that chemical contamination of Olympic sites presented unexpectedly large challenges, hid additional expenses such as VAT costs, and refused to confront the reality that the Olympics may have to be scaled back to keep within costs.
