Hello

My son has just lost his job and will no doubt have to start claiming JSA.

If he rents his house from a relative can he claim some sort of rent rebate ?

None of us in the family have ever been in this position, so we are all in the "dark" re-claiming

anything from anywhere.

Any pointers in the right direction before he does or says the wrong thing appreciated.

Peter

There is something called contrived tenancy. There is no simple answer here.

Contrived tenancy

You cannot claim HB if the local council believes that your liability to pay rent has been created to take advantage of the HB scheme. For example, if you live rent-free while you are in work, but have to pay rent when you are unemployed.

If you can satisfy the local authority that the arrangement was not intended to exploit the HB system, you may be able to get benefit.

Please use the quote system, So everyone will know what your referring too, thank you ...
