Hello Everyone,

Would like to share my hellish experience I had on Friday in TK Maxx.

I am apparently what you call a fraud, with a very busy work schedule and earnings of over 1k a month.

After browsing some purses in their store I came across one which I wanted to BUY.

The problem I had was that there was no tag advising the price. I took the trouble of finding a similar purse and taking both to the till in hope that it would speed up the process at the till as I had an appointment to make in short time.

When I got to the till I told the girl that I would like to buy the purse with no tag and asked how much it would be.

She opened it up and went through all of the card pockets inside and found a tag.

She said that the tag was probably the wrong one and scuttled over to her manager. After pointing and staring at me a few minutes, the girl came back to me and said 'my manager said that's fine'. She put my card payment through, gave me my receipt and I left the store.

Once I got outside I was approached my a tall strange looking man with an incredibly loud voice asking me to return to the store because he believed I switched the tags.

I told him I hadn't but he then loudly said infront of everyone sitting outside enjoying lunchtime coffee that it would be best I admit before he calls the police because he has it on CCTV!

I didn't want this embarrassing debate to continue infront of people so I followed him into the store.

Inside, I asked to see the CCTV. He tried everything possible to avoid it and tried to make me admit to something I did not do by saying that unless I deal with it in store he will call the police and it will go on my file and I may lose my job!

After the treatment I got I decided I don't want to shop there anymore anyway so happily signed the banning form in a bit to get out ASAP and make my appointment.

They took the purse and refunded my card.

As I was leaving he handed me a peice of paper and said that I'll hear from this company but did not explain what for.

He was reluctant to tell me anything so I took the bit of paper home to read and soon saw that they were going to use this third party company called RLP to claim money off you!!

I was disgusted and felt sick that they made it so easy for someone innocent to take on guilt and then pay for it.

I felt that this was a little scheme the staff had going between themselves in the store because I knew I hadn't done it. If I could go back in time I'd have got the police involved.

I'd also put a bet on it that the purse was put back on the shelf with the same tag inside it.

Makes me wonder if the security guy or TK Maxx make money out of it. Either that or they get some sort of a kick from it.

I haven't received a letter yet but I didn't show any photo ID whilst in store so will they know I gave the correct name and address and didn't use someone else's card? I never proved who I am.

Surely there's something I can do about this if I do receive a letter. Any advice?

My advice (should you receive a letter from RLP) is do bugger all, unlike other cases, there is no guilt to start with.

Personally I would of not signed anything and waiting for them to either let me go or call thge police, in fact I would insist they call they police if I was being held.

Hi jo

Welcome to CAG

TK Maxx Security Staff have targets they have to hit each week, it sounds that rather then listening to what you have to say, he was more concerned with his weekly stats. You could write a Formal Letter of Complaint, mark it as such. Explain whats happened, explain the facts regarding the 'purse's' and that the over zealous Security Guard was only thinking about his weekly target and had no regard for what you had to say. Explain that you want to make a Data Request for the store CCTV tape. Regarding RLP, don't be overly concerning regarding them.

Send it to:-

This, on the face of what you have said, is outrageous, and if it were me, I would be kicking up a storm at Head Office - poor surveillance, agressive behaviour and the rest!

Any advice given is done so on the assumption that recipients will also take professional advice where appropriate.

Definitely get the CCTV and make a complaint.

What you did with the purse without a price is precisely what anyone else would do. The purse that you wanted had no price, you asked what the price was, they went away, returned and told you.

This is outrageous and would suggest that you follow this up if you are strong enough

There is no legal case here against you, there is a case of THEFT against them as you have paid for an item in the store and they have 'confiscated' it.

Crikey!!! I would go for them big time!! What a bunch of sharks, they ate clearly unaware of the definition of theft!!

I would also consider getting a friend to go in and see if you can spot the purse again and see if they have retagged it? Maybe take a photo!!

Only a thought??

Thank you all for your advice, I have seen that it will cost me £10 to get the CCTV footage but to be quite honest I don't want to pay anything really. I'd like to just forget about the whole thing, it's their loss that they no longer have me or my family as a customer and I'm sure they'll suffer more financially from that than what they have suffered tagging the purse, and getting some loud mouthed lurch to talk [email protected] to me for 10 minutes! I have read a document from the CAB regarding RLP and they suggest that apart from those people that have given in and paid after receiving threatening letters from them, all other cases have been dropped. None have gone to court. In the great majority of these reported cases, the ‘claim’ was eventually dropped (or, at least, no further letters were received from Retail Loss Prevention) after being challenged robustly by the CAB and/or the client, or after simply being ignored. I think I am going to go down the route of ignoring any letters received and will just forget about the whole experience

Hi

Do whatever you feel is best for you !

Sometimes it is best to take the moral high ground !

Quite clearly these companies behave in this manner because they know people don't like the confrontation and embarrassment factor.

Take care.

Hi Jojo 03. I had a similar hellish experience. After reading the blogs I was tempted just to ignore the letters from RLP. But every time you get a letter you are reminded of the incident and the memories just won't go away. I eventually wrote a letter to Debbie Lake, TJX Europe Head of Customer Service, 50 Clarendon Road, Watford, WD17 1TX. I just explained the facts and tried to leave out any emotional issues. I received an excellent response. They conducted a full investigation and then wrote me a detailed letter with their findings. They withdrew the banning notices and instructed RLP to cancel the Civil Recovery Action. I can now forget the incident and get on with my life. I would strongly advise you (and anyone else out there) to do the same. Good luck!

Hi.

Just read this interesting reply you got back , I may take note of this as ive put a thread up and had great advice from members on here.

The best I was told was send a letter denying any liabilty to rlp and whom the act on behalf of as suggested.

I wanted the police there when I was wrongly accused , but the general advice is above , but that address maybe of use .

i used to work there, they think everyone is a thief, infact customers to them are nothing more than **** scraped from the bottom of your shoe.

i have no doubt in my mind that the purse probably got put back on the shelf with the ''switched'' ticket price attached.

someone above mentioned that tk maxx have arrest targets, you know that doesnt suprise me.

one of the old security guards used to ring the phone on the till whenever i served a black man or woman. im not kidding, he would do it everytime without fail !!
