Just spent over an hour on the 'phone to Barclays arguing the toss about these payments. I politely (at first) requested that they cancel the current CPA's. Because they are for Payday loan companies they just refused point blank. I pointed them in the direction of everything listed in this thread but they're just not interested. I've ended up cancelling two cards so I can't even use on line banking. I've transferred funds over from savings to current to cover cheques and DD's tomorrow but it's been snaffled twice.

I'm not trying to get out of paying, I need to pay from another account but I'm not setting it up as they'll probably take it twice.

The trying to get out of paying has nothing to do with it. If payments have been made after you requested they be stopped, then make a claim for them even threatening court if they don't put it back into your account immediately and don't forget the interest as well.

Joe, can you do it again and record the call, that would be a real coup for the ordinary man.

I would have told barclays that you are now issuing court proceedings and you require the name of the representative on the phone. Thats usually enough for the rep to pass the call to someone much more knowledgeable.

I spoke to three different people. India....Coventry....India. First person said, "no I can't stop them". Yes you can says I...bit of argue then he says I'll get my supervisor. Supervisor wouldn't come to the 'phone but confirmed to his minnion that they couldn't be stopped. Passed across to someone else, Proper English speaker but with a Coventry accent, lol. Said the same thing but I just kept arguing with him and getting nowhere. Passed back to India, might as well have went for a walk in the park. Banks clearly don't like me. I'm having a battle with the RBS at the moment and now this. Not quite sure if I could do it all again but I might if I get my voice back.

Good luck to joesoap. It would be interesting to hear a recording of these conversations.

And any replies he has from the bank.

From the Paul Lewis report this statement somewhat shocked me.

Some banks have even advised that the only way to stop the payment is to close the account and cut up the card. Not only is that advice wrong it may not work. Visa and Mastercard can let merchants track you and move the agreement to a card you take out in the future. It has also been known for a bank or credit card provider to try to recover the money – and penalty charges – from customers who have cancelled a card.

Sorry for putting that on twice-hard to take in.Wow.

Ouch! Hope not. Kept the account but cancelled both cards. I've DD's/cheques coming out today but didn't dare transfer any money into the account last night to cover them. Explained to the bank but with the greatest respect to our customer services, they are still reading from scripts! I'll now get into trouble for non payment of the DD and cheque.

The only way I have found that is nearly fool proof

is to change banks.

My credit report is shot to bits after my wife's illness. Another bank will not touch us, well, maybe a basic account.

Get in touch with the CRA and they will be able to advise on some accounts for you.

Try the Co-op bank they have a good basic

account, don't try a bank in the same group

as your current bank.

You have to apply for the co-op basic bank account by telephone(number is on their website) , but it's very easy to do - I witnessed one of my colleagues applying over the phne in their tea break and it was approved there and then, and he has CCJ's.

Thats a pretty good thing by the co-op :) Reminds me too. I need to downsize my account. 8.99 a month atm and not using any of the facilities lol. But it's advancing my credit score nicely :D

Well, after wasting an hour of my precious time chatting to Barclays last night, I went into the branch today. Sadly, I wasted another hour of my precious time getting absolutely nowhere; ******************************useless! I'll have to come back later or tomorrow, just so annoyed. They've bounced a DD and a cheque due to insufficient funds because they wouldn't cancel a CAT. They seem to be taking the moral stance, you've borrowed, so pay it back. Surely it has t**s all to do with them!

Does a Co - op basic account have a facility for purchasing on line stuff. I need it for flight tickets etc.

That made me mutter words the swear filter won't allow on here. I don't suppose you got a recording ?

You're right that it has sod all to do with them, if you take out a thousand loans and then go bankrupt, it has nothing to do with them.

You should sar them and make sure you get a transcript of the telephone conversations you had with them on Monday.

Thanks for the info guys. Didn't record last night and couldn't in the branch today. Just felt so frustrated, the staff know nothing regarding these matters; obviously neither does the CAT section!

Because Barclays won't cancel the CPA's, Im having to contact the "merchants". Is thi enough?

Please do not attempt to recover money from the account. To this end, I withdraw my authority for you to take any further Continuous Payments from my account using my debit card or by any other means.

Have you reported Barclays for non-compliance with the law?

Also, get all your paperwork together and keep it safe, you 'will' be claiming all charges etc that have appeared since you first told them to stop payments.
