A querey.

We booked our wedding with a well known hotel chain last year for this May. We have arranged the full ceremony and after party with them and paid them as instructed on the relevant dates. When we asked for the final settlement figure they provided this and we paid. They are now telling us that they forgot to charge us room hire on the ceremony room and that we owe them a further £200. We are most disappointed as we have kept in regular contact with them and have trusted them to keep us informed as the event planners to allow us to concentrate on other areas. They state they did originally quote this but then have admitted that due to their error this was never charged. We have always paid and acted in good faith and have not received any invoices from them for any payments made. Should we have to pay this money with 2 weeks to go bearing in mind our budget is maxed.

Hi 831badger

I am a public prosecutor, so always seek advice from CAB as well when listening to my advice. This is a very serious issue. There are two options for you based on the fact you are getting married 1) you could pay it and put the matter behind you, or 2) dispute it and it could delay your wedding entirely.

When a company gives a quotation, usually, unless it explicitly says different in their terms and conditions, they are bound by the quote when they issue a receipt for final settlement. They cannot change the cost once they have settled with the final settlement as it is by its very nature, final. If they made a mistake then that is their liability and not yours. They are not able to charge you extra unless you have waivered some aspects of this right in their Terms and Conditions. Generally though, adding costs would generally be seen as deception and at the least unfair. You would be best placed to advise the hotel chain that the final settlement (if itemised this will go to your advantage) has already been made and therefore no further charges can be added to that agreement unless a new agreement is made for a new service.

I would ring them and tell them you dispute this request. It is then for you to decide whether you wish to pursue it further should they outright refuse.

Have you an itemised quote or indeed the invice/final bill? which includes this item. If it does and you have paid the monies due then thats their problem.

However if this item is not staed anywhere then it was not included and you have not paid for it, so if you want it then you will have to pay. It would be the same as if was included then. They are not charging extra as such just the cost of what you wanted all be it a bit late.

Suggest if that is the case then a bit of negotiating may bring it down a bit.
