Am I the only one who thinks that the only person in the world who thinks Ricky Gervais is funny is Ricky Gervais? I enjoyed him in The Office but I didn't realise that David Brent was a self-portrayal. What aWanchor.jpg

Probably his opening liner at the awards ceremony-they have been showing it on the news.

The Los Angeles Times appear to agree with Fred;

Despite all his tough talk leading to Sunday night's broadcast, it was a markedly respectful and restrained Ricky Gervais who showed up to host this year's Golden Globes, leaving one to wonder why he bothered to take the gig at all (except for the money, of course).

After a performance last year that viewers found either ruthless and mirthless — or ruthless and hilarious — many were surprised the Hollywood Foreign Press Association asked the British comedian back. Yet as every entertainer knows, nothing sells tickets like controversy, and so the Globes launched an ad campaign playing off the idea of the comedian would be unmuzzled. Meanwhile, Gervais went on a media blitz explaining why last year's show was, in fact, not offensive and why he would not be cowed by thin-skinned critics.

That just shows how bad the 'Comedy' talent in this country has been over the last 10 years, it's been pretty dire.

Well I did like the Office. But I didn't realise that David Brent was actually Gervais's true persona.

List the top 20 Comedy Actors in the UK ever, he wouldn't make the list, I'd be surprised if he made the top 100.

I suppose it all boils down to what you find funny. Personally, I put Gervais's 'humour' in the same mould as that of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand. It's all about them and it's all about being an overgrown schoolboy. It's just not funny to me I'm afraid.

Who are your favourites?

At the moment, I think there are quite a few good comedians about:

Dara O'Briain

John Bishop

Jason Manford

Ed Byrne

Kevin Bridges

Rhod Gilbert

Milton Jones

Rich Hall

Reginald D Hunter

Michael Macintyre

Lee Mack

Ross Noble

Paul Merton

David Mitchell

Adam Hills

There's some. I think all of them are way way funnier than Ricky Gervais. I would happily pay to see all of them, but not him.

Some great names. Right now my absolute fave is Milton Jones, he cracks me up. I love puns - and he does it with a degree of intellect! Saw him on tour last November, it was excellent!

Have to disagree with John Bishop, however. I find him really dire! The rest are great though!

My favourite out of this lot:

"About a month before he died, my grandfather, we covered his back full of lard – after that he went downhill very quickly."

......and my other grandfather....lol :D

I agree, the office was one of those programmes I watched through my fingers. Some parts were so cringeworthy that they were almost painful. I work in an office environment and have done for most of my working life. I would conceed that the observation of the environment is bang on but for me it was like watching a programme about work when i was off work and trying to forget about work so it was kind of a strange pleasure.

However, Ricky Gervais as a person(ality) is crass, rude and very unfunny. I just dont get it. How the hell did he get this famous with such a little tallent? He obviously knows someone who knows someone because I dont think the public feel the same way about him as the people who buy his crass programmes.

My...didnt realise I felt that strongly on the subject :0

Advice given is my opinion only, I am not a legal or financial expert (far from it).
