Last year I had a car accident which resulted in my car being ruled a write-off.

Now the tax-disc was returned to me pretty quickly but I didn't know that it needed to be returned prior to it expiring in order to claim the refund.

Anyway, due to one thing and another I forgot about until last month when I sorting through some old paperwork I came across it.

I've since sent it off and today have received the DVLA's reply which tells that they are unable to issue a refund.

I'm thinking of appealing as this was a genuine error and was wondering if anyone had come across similar instances where the motorist had been successful.

Thanks in advance.

Refunds are only made for complete months from the date you actually surrender the tax disc via form V14.

Since your tax disc expired prior to claiming a refund, even though it may be a genuine error, I'm afraid you'll have to write this off to experience.

Maybe not but I reckon they'd be able to check any vehicles tax history and verify that in a fair few cases they've been paid twice the tax for the same period of time.

And when told about a genuine oversight all you get is a standard reply pretty much telling you 'tough luck'.
