Hi

A rather long winded issue that i'll try to keep as short as possible with valid content.

I moved into my Wifes house September last year, at the same time i combined this with a job starting in November working from home - i'm in IT so used to doing most things remotely.

Only option for the estate (new build, 8 years tops) was to go with a BT line. Very quickly it dawned that a service was going to be poor. I went with BT at the time as i figured it was the horses mouth scenario instead of piggybacking. The best i got for a month or two was 800kbps (quoted 2-4mbps), i had x3 engineers out and finally managed to get to a peak of 2.4 in June\July but by that point i'd given up with BT and its overseas que card system then call a support desk.

I then swapped to Daisy Business Broadband in November this year with the promise of a fast connection moving onto LLU broadband and as it was a business it would be pretty much uncontended !

Well the best i've managed so far was 2.2 (less than BT) and its currently sync'd at 1.7.

My question is ?

Are there any grounds to pursue through a relevant body that the broadband or BT infrastructure in my case is not fit for purpose ?, The national average is apparently 6mb and no doubt this is entirely brought down by the BT infrastructure because Virgin are running at 40-100mb. For the average to be 6mb a substantial amount of the population must be below that.

I have been told my cabinet is full and that i took the last "pair" to troubleshoot my line initially so can i move cabinet or have it requested. Just for reference my cabinet is Keighley. I actually lost the job that i started then just after xmas because of all of the issues - it was not a good time.

Ian

Hi

From my Experience:

To be honest, if you really wanted to get a better connection, the only option would be a T1 minimum. I have had problems for many years, and im only 3 miles about 4km from a major city centre. I barely get a fairly responsive 2 MB most of the time, but on occasion have had problems with lost connections.

A lot of ISP's do not own the wires that they provide service on, they rent or lease the wires from BT, and we all know getting anything out of BT is next to impossible. If you have money which sounds like you don't, I would just try to tolerate the speed you currently have, BT nor your ISP will be willing to spend the money needed to make a noticeable difference unless you are willing to pay a serious amount of cash to pay for it yourself. BT pretty much has a dictatorship for communications in England Scotland and Wales.

Sometimes a change of router/modem can help, and also no matter which ISP you choose, it is still doubtful you will get much higher than your current speed, the quality of the cables from exchanges has depreciated over the years and BT will not spend money on renewing the lines with better cables.

Sorry I can not help, but the opinion I've shown here, is in my experience the only thing you can do.

It is more complicated than just this, but the best i can do for the moment :)

Good luck

Regards

Atom

BT broadband is offering a new services for 50mbps very shortly and they are testing it in trials at this moment. It seem to that you have a slow connection but you can config it in the router or a web acc from the internet.

BT has got all captials of new subjects like new super broadband to its customers too.

its takes time to do this

Sympathise with you as we have similar complaint against Orange (see my post in this forum). These companies market connection speeds that just aren't available and get round it by saying 'up to xxx mb' - usually nowhere near what you actually get. You're in IT so it may be preaching to the converted but try Maplins braided High Speed ADSL Modem Lead.

Telecoms companies are duping their customers and we all need to complain about it.

We've started an e-petition online about speeds - pm me for link

your modem no matter how good it is will not make any change to the connection speed the only change it will make is the speed it sends out wifi to your laptop or pc from 54mbps or 300mbps but the connection (coming into your house) is the speed your getting this will fluctuate slightly thats it the further away from the exchange box the slower the speed also all the homes from the box to your home catch the speed so if your last your slower its not fair we all pay the same price but get less of a service im totally screwed because a man from a well known computer magazine knocked at my door 1 day and said doing a review and did you know your street is 1 of 18 with the slowest internet connection in the country well thanks for telling me mr doom and gloom ive been with BT, TALKTALK and now with SKY all the same speed i live about 3-4 miles away from the exchange office im meant to get upto 10MB i get 1.2MB tops i live in a new build too until virgin can rip up the road and give us faster cables it looks like 1.2MB for me but thats the only solution i know of virgin cables

oh just a note wired connection is always better than wireless so if you can use a ethernet cable from your modem to your pc or laptop this will give the max speed of the modem to your pc/laptop

Beachkat this is a very good idea.

I think it would be good to post the link to your e petition in this forum, although I would suggest that you start your own thread for it so it can be viewed more easily.

ALternatively we do have a sub forum for petitions and also campaigns.

i just found this website with some helpful tips on testing and fixing speed and connection problems using your master socket this is were your line comes into your house and on the wall inside your house is the master socket joined to that line check this website out http://www.webuser.co.uk/broadband/advice/372354/fix-broadband-connection-faults

also forgot to mention interference on your line like electricity or phones can slow your speeds down you can buy a i-plate for about £5 this with stop the interference and speed things up sometimes even if your not running from the master socket it can work, but sockets with BT OPENREACH logo on already have this technology in them just so you all know

Good points.

I would also agree that cable is better than fixed line.

I had VM broadband and never had any problems with speeds or connection, but have switched to TT using a BT line and frequently experience DC and slowdowns.

My neigbours also complain of the same.

Martin and Matrix, post on their "member forum" site and get them to balance your profile. They managed to get me more stability, and I'm as far from the exchange as you possible can be and still get broadband.
