We receivedd a letter that stated we had to do nothing, and that our policy would auto renew, turns out it didnt auto renew, and now have to be classed as a new polciy holder, which is costing 300 more then last year, even my renewal is more, but for some reason its the cheapest around

the insurance is for a 1.4 vauxhall corsa 24 year old female driver 2 years full polciy nc bonus driving 6 years with no claims, 4 years name driver ncb (althought we can not use these any more) with the same company..

What can we do? they are making it out to be our fault, not only that but we have been using the car.. if the police had pulled us that would be bye bye car.. they just dont seem to care houw bad this is. there must be away i can get them to re-add this policy.

what happen was my partner called them asking where our policy docs where and our insurance certificate, this is when they told us it did not renew and did not give us a reason, the Direct Debit is still in place and has not been altered.

What does it say in your policy docs ?

There have been lots of complaints about Auto renewals where the Policyholder did not want it,and it has been viewed as an unfair business practice.

If they have continued to take payments after the last policy term finished, then it would seem you have a good complaint.

If they will try to say that this was in consideration of a new policy, then your arguement would be that you did not agree nor sign for a higher amount.

I think you need to look what the policy wording says about this.

Put something in writing and send recorded keeping a copy.

Demand a copy of their complaints procedure and a reply in writing by 14 days.

Car Insurance companies are abysmal when it comes to responding to complaints in writing.

Maker it clear that you will be filing a complaint with the FOS if this is not resolved.

I will move your thread to the insurance forums.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 3 months later...

It was worse for me as I had been driving for two months blissfully unaware that my insurance had not auto-renewed. I was stopped by the police last week as my reg had come up on their scanner as uninsured. Subsequently I now have a fixed penalty of £200, 6 points and the prospect of having to pay £300 to recover my car, which was impounded. OK, I should have read the Renewal invitation closer, but having been with Direct Line for several years, auto-renewing each year, I just assumed that this year was no different. OK, I should have checked my bank statements more closely, and I accept that, legally at least, it is my responsibility to ensure that I am insured to drive - but it is a real pain. Added to all that, Direct Line now want almost £200 a year extra premium from me!

it will auto renew, so keep the letter safe

you may need it later if they dont rectify

give them a ring and ask if they got your letter
