Even if it goes perfectly and all downloads about everything and by everyone are blocked without any way around it, they wont make a penny more in profits. The worlds attitude seems to be "If I can't have it for nothing then I don't want it at all", especially for music and movies.

All this ruling will do,is encourage people to down load even more illegal downloads and by pass any blocking software that's use...

 

I have No sympathy at all media industry and companies who apply for theses ruling

BT's head of retail Simon Milner came out swinging after the legal setback over web-blocking. While admitting the company is "not deliriously happy", it welcomes a clarification. And BT won't be appealing the decision.

"We believe in an open internet – we won't do any other blocking," he told us. "We will never stop our customers getting to any service they want to get to.

"Unless a court orders us to."

 

That's the attitude we want.

an industry that pays a star £20 million to do a film then cries poverty gets no sympathy, I like Billy Braggs attitude as long as some people buy his stuff those people who cant afford to buy it shouldn't be denied the chance to enjoy it so he has no problems with downloads. Also many music stars say its not music sales that make them the most money but the live shows.

I believe that many western so called free countries will slowly adopt a net policy similar to China and there will be certain sites 'blocked', (perhaps still reachable) but officially blocked, now whilst most of us would applaud this for child porn and card rip off sites, its a big leap to start to block sites that MAY be infringing copyright, the net blocking fiasco reared its ugly head with the controversy of The Scorpions Virgin Viller album, an album that had been freely available for many years in record stores but was suddenly blocked/banned/call it what you will by various powers that be.Andy

said that. in my experience dvds and cds are only bought as xmas presents (easy option). actually most films and albums I've bought in the past, weren't worth buying.

Successive attempts to sue their customers failed so this is now what the "entertainment" industry is doing.

 

Do they not realise that the free downloads are the ONLY way some people will ever see/hear their products?

 

Many will not buy until they have seen/heard.

 

To be quite honest after seeing some films and hearing some albums you would have been extremely disappointed if you had paid good money for them.

 

Even when you buy CDs/DVDs the assumption is that you will copy them anyway, hence they do not offer a "no quibble money back guarantee". Its as if they know 99% of their wares are trash!

I always look at the net as both a godsend and a pain. The same with smartphones.

However the concept of the internet was for freedom an not silly laws to curtail life. Look as so called USSR when it changed from Communism to Capitalism - now how the heck did the overnight billionaires come from?

These so called film makers have no idea that television has changed lives never mind the net. Pirated films are never going to be as good as the real big screen versions. Surely these people should see that people these days like to see before they buy as such. Greed is the key word and rightly as someone earlier said, how can they pay a film star £20million and cry poverty?

You need a mortgage to buy a cinema ticket these days so that's not an option for most people. If they are going to pirate it, they'll just wait until they can hire it and then copy it. Alternatively copy it when it finally gets shown on one of the cable movie channels. Blocking internet sites is simply delaying the inevitable.

 

I download and watch a film and if I think it's good, I'll go out and buy a legit version on DVD to support the producers. If I think it's crap, I never even watch it to the end before it's deleted. I won't buy it until I've seen it... EVER.

People will start dealing in bootleg DVDs and it will become a real criminal enterprise as it was before high speed internet. Copied video's and music were never hard to find at car boot sales or through "a friend of a friend", and with social networking we'll probably find some real cyber crime issues.

As far as films are concerned, no one forces you to go to the cinema or buy the DVDs etc. There are plenty of other film producers that often produce good films with maybe a lot less polish due to budget constraints. Also really the majority of films are hardly inspiring or uplifting when a lot of the content is violence, sex, greed etc. Vote with your pockets and the big companies will have to follow suit, they respond to market demand. If no one buys or tries to pirate the content then they will not have anyone to sue in the first place. Blocking content on the internet is going to have little positive effect because pirated DVD sales linked to criminal gangs will go up and for every person selling them that is caught another one will pop out like a mushroom. As already mentioned there will be many ways of circumvention of blocking methods even if protocols like bit torrent are blocked people will tunnel traffic instead. At the end of the day in a market demand and supply rules.

Additionally, this will be a first step in internet censorship. First it's "pirate" sites, then it soon becomes any site they don't want you to access on political grounds then it will start limiting access to information they don't want you to have by keywords and so on. Certain Youtube videos will be restricted due to their content if your government feels that it is "unsuitable for your country", what they mean is that the video may show your government to be liars and thieves and traitors to your country so they don't want you to see it.

 

Didn't people support the Blue Ribbon Campaign to combat internet censorship by our governments? Maybe this should be resurrected on the grounds that, while piracy may be a crime, censorship is not a viable answer because it gives the government too much power over what they elect to censor?

 

We already have ISP's capping bandwidth on torrents due to "piracy" but many legitimate torrent users like those downloading online games clients are being affected. WOW has in excess of a 6 gb download and that's often followed by a series of patches that totals more than 3 gb. My friend took nearly 24 hours in total to download and patch it when he started playing due to torrent speed capping of his 20mb connection by his ISP. 9gb should have taken just over an hour at max speed. Strange how torrent bandwidth was never an issue for ISP's until the government tried to stop P2P being used a few years back, again on the grounds of piracy. The government have tried various things to get the internet under their control. Pron was a big issue until you realise that, if you take the total number of magazines in a newsagent, there's a larger percentage of pron on their top shelf than on the internet compared to the other information available.

 

You can't fight piracy by censorship, it's as simple a that, but the government hate anything that isn't under their control so they will use any excuse they can to get control. At the end of the day, this isn't about piracy, it's about controlling what you can see, hear and read on the internet. I CALL THAT COMMUNISM.
