Hey everyone, please can someone guide me. Recently I got a warning given to me.. Due to me being 17 that's all they could do however I'm unsure as to whether what he actually gave me. He said it would be on my record for 5 years and would effect me working with kids or elderly etc etc. However I've got a job interview which I know will require a crb check and I'm just wondering whether my 'warning or caution' (what ever it was) will show up on the check. Again I'm 17 and he said it was the lowest of lowest warnings however he said it was still stay on my record for the 5 years. So someone please tell me whether it will show on my crb check. Also if there any offical way I can check whether it will show e.g. Going to the police station and asking. Thanks

Hello Mathsalex,

I know exactly how you feel regarding this, I'm sure a few others here do too.

When I was 15 I as a bit of a teenage tear away and I got a warning, I was too told it would remain on my record for 5 years.

Fast forward 12 years later, I have just got a job that requires a CRB check... there are 3 types, Basic Disclosure ( shows only unspent convictions) Standard Disclosure ( Shows Spent and unspent) and Advanced with shows you in all your morning glory.

If you search on the internet and look at these 3 checks, they only really apply to certain sectors of the job market, ie: finance, child care, care workers in general. For my role I went in for Basic Disclosure, that will show up clean... if the warning was ever official in the 1st place.

There is a website, search for disclosure scotland and you can purchase a basic disclosure for £25 takes about 12 days and will show if it there,

I dont think you can obtain personally either of the other 2 as your employer has to do that.

If you suspect there might be a problem with the CRB check then the best thing to do is be honest with your employer, explain what happened and why, most importantly be honest about it. Your prospective employer might just respect you for that.

Hope this helps

Good avice above, but further...

Was this an official 'Caution' or a metaphorical clip round the ear?

What was it that you were warned for?

What type of job are you applying for?

That will help us to add details a bit more specifically.

Any advice given is done so on the assumption that recipients will also take professional advice where appropriate.

Yehh I understand your situation. Lucky for you. However you saying all that I'm unsure which crb check they will do. You can't choose can you? I could possibly find out what kind of check the do there due to me knowing someone who works there now. Ill be working for royal mail but I don't think they would possibly be that strict on me being warned/cautioned (what ever it was). I can just hope that its the basic one because I'm thinking due to my age I can obiously of had any criminal records or I'd be in jail. Its a very very basic warning. If I find out what kind of check they do I can then prepar for it. I can't see them doing the higher crb check I think: hope they do the basic one just to make them aware if I have and convictions in which case I don't.

Hi, I'm not too sure, he just said it was the lowest type of warning nd that it will stay on my record for 5 years. Due to me being 17 I don't think that can officialy caution me. It was done at my house. Also I threw a water balloon at a parked car in which the owner then followed us. He also claims he sustained injury (from a water baloon) however I know the baloon hit the car. He just wants to claim :@.. I suppose I could go to a police station and ask. Ill be working at royal mail but again I know for a fact they do checks. However I'm sure they will only do a basic one due to my age

well,I used to work with the post office and they are a bit strict regards cautions etc,its all about security with them, but as above you can check up,hope its ok for you

I see. But surely my warning shouldn't affect them :/ its not as if I've been done for theft or anything. Did you have a warning when you started? I know someone who tells me they can be strict however again my age must have a play in all this

Anything on the record is probably notifiable in an Enhanced check. This will potentially even include things which you have been accused of but not charged, for example if there was not enough evidence.

This may seem slightly unfair but don't forget that the system was tightened up enough after the Soham murders, as Ian Huntley had been named as someone who was potentially abusing children but was never charged or convicted of anything as there was not a sufficiently strong case to do so - until he murdered two schoolgirls (who ironically were not pupils at the school he worked at but at the school his girlfriend was a TA at), so anyone in a position working with kids has these claims on file and will show on a disclosure.

However, don't forget a clean CRB disclosure is no more a green light than having recordable incidents on a check is a red light. If there are no recordable incidents on file that does not mean you are suitable to work with kids or whatever - it simply means that you have not been convicted or accused of anything yet, but that is all which can be used. Likewise being cautioned by police for eating an apple from Tesco without paying when you were 13 years old (and an otherwise unblemished record) would not reasonably preclude someone from being appointed to a position working with kids if they were in their 50s. It simply is a disclosure of what is on the file (from a certain level) to allow the potential employer or organisation to make a decision on your suitability for the position.

The above post constitutes my personal opinion on the facts in the post compared with my personal knowledge of the applicable legislation. I make no guarantees of its legal accuracy. If you are in doubt seek advice of a legal professional specialising in the area concerned.

I appreciate what your saying. See with what I've been 'warning or cautioned' with is something so basic and stupid that I don't believe it will effect my current job interview that I'm yet to attend. I was told it could effect the chances if I wanted to work with kids or as a security job somewhere. So ill declare it to the employees at the chance I have to and explain to them the truth of what actually happened and hopefully the man or woman interviewing me is having a good day and sees past the stupidity of it all. Thanks for the reply

All cautions do show up on enhanced CRB's, but also on the application forms there is a bit about declaring anything, i would just explain to employer before filling in the form, at least they know that there could be aproblem.

Yehh I suppose I just have to hope they see past it all. If you could kindly read what I replied to the last person you can gain more of an understanding of where I'm coming from, ill declare it to them because at the end of the day its not theft/ drugs or anything to make me look disloyal or anything. And due to me being 17 hopefully of my young age they'll see past it. Thanks for the reply

In my experience Royal Mail don't actually CRB check as such. They do quite a hefty criminal record check. I'd tell the interviewer/declare it on the application.

Oh, and if you want a hand with any interview questions they might ask, PM me. I've worked for them for 7 long years...

I keep reading about how "strict" they are being with new recruits, and yet my local mail centre still carts in agency employees by the lorry load. Of course, no checks for them. Which is how they nick anything they can carry.

I didn't say that though...

Nice lol. However apparently they have become stricter due to terrorism etc. But saying that I'm 17 its nothing for them to think twice about me. Its not theft. Its merely a minor thing. I just hope it'll be okay. Where are you based by the way? Private message me if you don't want to disclose it here :) thanks for the info

Yehh see I know someone who works for them and as much as I know they're strict I again don't see how or why they wouldn't employ me over something so petty. Its the lowest of lowest possible thing they could give me. Yehh I've heard they employ so many staff through agency

Go the the Police station and asked what it was.

If it was a caution you should have gotten something in writign I would imagine. And if they said it woudl be on your record then it sounds like it will be a caution,

That's the thing I'm 17 and by law they can't give a caution. Also I never had any paper work given to me. However I may still go to the police station and find out

I think you'll find they can give you a caution if you're under 18:

Young people, aged 10-17, can get cautions but they are called reprimands and warnings.
